Vagupparai 4B, translated in English as Classroom 4B is a short film that intensifies you with the film after watching it. Basic education is the right of human beings.
“Education is a must” is not just a phrase. And we all realized at some point in our life, what our life would be if we haven’t got at least this minimal knowledge of education? Alike, now imagine the circumstance what if a child doesn’t get an education. This scenario happening between the motherless kid and his father was the base story of the film, Classroom 4B. The director of this film, Mr. Jameer doesn’t trigger a political satire nor push opinion on them is a glitch about the film. An exclusive representation of the daily life of a lower-low class family, their struggle for daily food, striving of the father to make his family living is top-notch making.
The first frame of the movie starts explaining to the audience that this film is raising their voice for the need for education to the poor family is the necessity. And this was the only motive behind the film as a kid Kutty was learning his school syllabus in the evening with his high pitch voice which could knock on the door of nearby mates.
There was a piece of indigestible news from the media proclaiming that the Tamil Nadu government has decided to shut down 800 government schools in various districts of Tamil Nadu. One of the schools in their bait was the protagonist of the films, kid’s school also has become the dead fish. Father softly persuades him to go for silk looming where he could get 250 as a daily wage, where they can sufficiently have their meal, in a round savings of 7500 per month alone from Kutty. He is adamant to continue his pleasure of education so he refuses the proposal of his father. The heartbreaking incident happens to Kutty when he finds his school has been closed as like said in the news. The next few days have been spent only revisiting school as a former student and then he jumps in the wall to continue his living as a student to learn. The school would not open at any cost is an unavoidable fact. What happens to Kutty’s education is the one and surprising question mark which ends the film with a miserable conclusion.
When the father asks his child what is the use of learning with a high voice and the kid explains to him, “My teacher told me it helps to increase brain power.” The University of Waterloo in Canada, reports that the “dual action” of learning in a high voice and hearing yourself helps the brain to store the information so that it becomes a long-term memory. Their detailing in a tiny element too is vital for the film.
The innocence of the two boy’s discussion of their playing, school reopening, admission to new school holds a part in our heart. Kids could easily win the human’s heart. And thus the kids have given their promising work. The only shining element in their house was the calendar. The art department’s work is appreciable in this area. Kutty’s strike puzzle in the calendar for determination of hope on his school reopen adds charm to the film.
An editor, the director himself has done his part well. The scene which requires long shots for the emotion and cut shorts to make the scene interesting was perfectly executed. The cinematography of this film adds a pillar to this Classroom 4B. Cinematographer Navin’s hard work is reflected in the film. The portrayal of boy’s and their shoot location is just literally awesome. It adds nature to the film. A lot of wide shots have been shot. But, few should have avoided it to give more details by getting closer to the artists.. Different techniques and movements must be implemented to take this film to the next level. The art department made the boy’s uniform look peculiar. The next shining element after the calendar was the kid’s uniform. It does not justify the poverty level of their preparation. Music Composer Ram Kathirvelu increases the eccentricity of the film.
Big applause to the makers, they elucidate about the usual provide of vaccination for the children in the school, justification of parenting both boy and girl child nowadays is a thorn in a flower task and the society’s search on the meager jobbers is only on the time of natural calamity is the strongest dialogue they talked about. They should have cared to mention the protagonist’s location of the home. Either the name of the hometown or at least the school’s location, the main plot. Kutty crossing the bridge, roads, several houses are acceptable but not the river where they have shown twice in the film.
And finally, Vagupparai 4B (Classroom 4B) is the hard-hitting reality, the life of children comes from the poverty class and the snake and ladder game of politicians using people as their dice playing with their future. The dream of wisdom, knowledge through education would fade like a dream… As shown in the post title card of this film should not happen, it is in our hand to raise voice for education.
