Understanding the core: What happens in protagonist’s dream

Appreciation and Critique:

The very first thing that we will investigate in a film is its concept and the story. Only if we love the concept, we will continue to watch. It is like reading a book. Only if we like the concept of the book, we will continue reading. And that is how I continued watching this film. The concept was unique. In the first frame, we can see a person sleeping and he was the protagonist. The immediate next frame is inserted with a blur focal dreamy effect which attracted me immediately. Also, the color of the screen is attractive. Then the film continues with a horror kind of thriller music which attracted even more. I was waiting for the dialogue, but later I realized this film is a dumb drama kind. The dumb drama which is also we can call that as mime was introduced by Shakespeare in his drama. Later, the pattern evolved and was used by many filmmakers and drama writers. So, this film is one of its kind. So, the main plus point of this movie is that it has no dialogue which means it has no language. So, anyone can watch the film and there will be no language barrier. The script goes on and the protagonist was angry with someone. He was shouting, then the frame shows that there is no one in front of him, then the first frame comes again and shows that someone is sleeping. That is the protagonist is sleeping. Here, we can connect it like the effect of the inserted screen is a dream world. The protagonist was sleeping and we are experiencing the protagonist’s dream world.

In the description, they mentioned it as an undercover actor. So, I’m also using the same term for better understanding. The undercover actor is no one in his dream and he was shouting at them badly. Then the quarrel between them grew and the protagonist killed the imaginary person by pushing them on the cupboard, hitting them with books and the music will trigger the suspense. The protagonist hears the door knocking sound and he opens the door, and the screen simultaneously shows that the protagonist is getting up from his sleep.

This is the place where I appreciate the director Hariharan for bringing out outstanding sync and concept. When he opened his eyes, he was staring and when he turned left, there was someone and we can assume it was the undercover actor. Hariharan seems to be very clever in making the audience end up with some sort of suspense that no one knows who is the undercover actor, who is he/she, why the protagonist wants to kill them, what they did, and all.

Moreover, we might have heard this scientific fact that 70% of what we run in our subconscious mind for a day is what will come in our dream and this fact is verified. So, there is another question that arises from this fact is what made the protagonist think like this. This is a thriller suspense story. Director Hariharan handled this film very cleverly.

Though the music is by Kevin McLeod and it is not produced by the film crew, we will skip about the music. But the choice is good.

I was attracted by the frames that Hariharan fixed. Whatever the frames, the wide, the close, the tight, whatever the frame it was attractive and conveyed the meaning too. Speaking about the frames and angles it was good. When the protagonist pushes the undercover actor into the cupboard, the camera will come down as someone is falling. The scene conveyed the scenario without showing the person. This is the attractive part. But here as a normal audience, I won’t expect anything from the screen, but as a technician or as a critic I will expect every aspect of a frame. Though it was recorded inside the room, the lighting is not efficient to convey the script effectively. Though it is a dream, it has a pattern to show the style of the dream. It should have both bright and dark colors and contrast. These frames had only fewer contrast colors because of lack of lighting.

Sound effects are a major plus point for this film. The sound effects are not foley and it was a plugin that can easily be available on the internet for free. But placing the sound effects like, Thud sound effect, blood smash sound effect in the right place is the skill of the team. It was attractive to hear that sound. The dump drama with the essential sound effects always makes the best pair. This is what lifted the Subconscious Truth Tamil Short Film.

Speaking about the acting, the protagonist’s acting was good. It was a bit difficult to act like someone is there in front of us by imagining. It needs an appropriate understanding of the story to do that. This protagonist did it very well.

Hariharan himself did most of the job, so all credits go to him. Over-the-top camera which was done by Vasuki also did a very good job in the end. Congrats to the team and wish to continue their passion with the same enthusiasm. If the team worked even harder, then their works will be recognized in high places one day.
