Understanding the core: In this award winning tamil short film storyline is finding the person named Jack who was stuck in space or another dimension.
Appreciation and Critics:
It is not always the same for everyone to make a movie with a perfect story. The director Ravinthiran Partheepan has come up with a good story which is also difficult to shoot. The movie Jack was a good attempt in the short film society. Congratulations to the whole team for making a film. Congratulations to minion productions for producing this film.
The film Jack tells about a person named Jack who is stuck in the other dimension and he was trying to connect with a person on the earth and somehow they managed to solve an equation to bring Jack back to earth.
The story starts with the scene where Jack the spacesuit person is trying hard to manage in this space floating in the air. And the next scene is where the person on the earth explains its condition to the audience. He cannot explain how it feels but he tries to brief what are the things he was experiencing. There, he has this vibe where someone is following him. Also he has a special feeling that his environment is changing according to his mobile wallpaper. Whenever he changes the wallpaper the environment around him is also changing. This aspect of this film was one of the good elements that can be spoken. The amount of time invested in this scene and the idea of making the environment change according to the wallpaper is one of the good ideas that I’ve come across in this film.
By seeing those effects we can assume that this team worked more on special effects and editing. To edit a scene like this the film crew should have thought this before shooting the scene. This is the determination that every budding filmmaker should possess. I love the way it was conveyed through dialogues.
Even though the SFX are a bit strange, it was a bit satisfying and at the same time felt this SFX isn’t enough for the script. Because of the script’s weight.
But, I see this film as amateur filmmaking. Because I don’t feel the way that this film could grab the audience’s attention. Grabbing the audience’s attention is the primary task of the film. In this film, the first scene itself, there is an amateur edit of Jack inside the spacesuit. That looked a bit unsatisfying. Because audiences who don’t know who you are watch this film, how they get attracted and how they continue watching. Because as we all know the film’s frames and colors are not professional. The frames are not stable and we can see the frames have not followed the grid. I’ll suggest the team should take care of the frame grid and steadiness. So many areas the frames are out of the grids and those frames aren’t steady enough. The shots felt strange and not at all clear.
The next thing I’m not satisfied with is the speed of the film. The film mostly traveled with a low tempo. Even though the script is nothing for the scene, the duration made me fast forward to the scene. And even at a time, I chose the playback speed to 1.25x to forward the scene. The scene can be shorter than usual. But the scenes were clear to understand.
One thing that I’m not satisfied with and I don’t see it correlating with the script that much is the equation. The script that the team has chosen is a heavy one. It isn’t a simple thing to convince people of Indian or Tamil to watch a science fiction movie. That is because of our culture and technology development’s trend. The equation they used seems simple and I would suggest working more on the major element equation or should not even show the equation if they aren’t sure about it.
The dialogues also seemed a bit not equally clear as creativity. And the fonts used in the scene were amateur. To make it more professional the dialogues should always be in white. And few of the areas are dialogue-less. So it was hard for me to understand the subtitles. Also regarding dubbing, in few areas the artist was speaking and in few areas the artist weren’t speaking but we can hear the dubbing voice. The scenes and the audio were not correlating. The lag in the audio was also not clear enough.
Even though this film had little amateur content, the film’s creativity and the work behind the scenes, and the team effort are worth spending time on. The film is full of creativity and innovation. I would appreciate the team for its creativity alone.
