This film was directed by Dinesh Kumar and it stars Kapil Anandh and Swarna in the lead roles. Kapil Anandh also worked on the film’s story, screenplay, and dialogues. The story revolves around two individuals who are compelled by their parents to look for a life partner, and during their engagement ceremony, the two of them decide to have a serious discussion on whether they want to proceed with the ceremony and confess their true feelings on why they feel they are not ready for this marriage.

The film starts with Raja and his family visiting Anichangudi’s home to ask for her hand in marriage. We get to know more about both the families as they chat around waiting for the bride to show up and find out that Raja is the breadwinner in his family. The filmmakers play around with the traditional tropes and put their spin on this genre. The comedic moments of the film are placed in this scene, mostly delivered by Raja’s friend and the banter between him and his mother as they whisper remarks about the bride’s family amongst themselves. While the humor mostly lands in the beginning, it fell flat and became mildly irritating due to the over usage of jokes but it never goes to the point where it takes you away from the film.

After the bride shows up, she calls out Raja separately to discuss something important with him. It turns out that she is not ready or interested in this marriage at the moment. She explains more about her lifestyle and the way she was raised by her parents. A recipient of 2 degrees, yet she hasn’t put them to good use and spends her days at her home. Having led a sheltered life, she feels she lacks the bravery to confess this to her parents fearing they won’t let her pursue her dreams. Hence, she confides with Raja that at the moment, a Marriage would only hinder her from making the choices she wants and she meant no offense.

Turns out that even Raja isn’t interested in proceeding with the marriage at the moment and his reasons are quite different. Unlike Anichangudi, Raja formerly loved someone but never got around to confessing to that person as his family was in a dire financial crisis. He didn’t have the luxury to hang out and have fun unlike his peers and instead had to work for his family’s well-being from a very young age. Having worked for quite a long time, he is not interested in working at a job but instead wants to be a househusband. Fearing what others might think of this idea he never mentioned it to anyone else and figured that such a proposition won’t work out in an arranged marriage so he wasn’t on board with this.

While their motivations are different, they realized that they could both achieve what they want and make this marriage work. So, after a long discussion both of them are ready to proceed with the marriage and what follows is a montage of what their married life would look like and that concludes the short film. Kapil Anandh and Swarna were the heart of this film and they gave an engaging performance. Even the other cast members were nice additions to the film and their performances were entertaining. The film mostly delivered on the romantic aspects rather than the comedic moments for me. It was nicely paced and not a moment felt like a waste of time. It was also shot pretty well and the film looks beautiful, D.O.P Prasad did a great job. The final song along with the montage was nicely edited and complimented each other. It was a nice addition to include the bloopers during the credits as they were thoroughly entertaining and kept you engaged till the end of the film. Overall Ae Bandhamo Idhi Ae Bandhamo is a well-made romantic short film that I recommend to everyone, as it conveys the importance of choice and conversation everyone must have with their fiancée before the wedding and convey to one another what troubles them.
