About Varundhigirom (Sorry) Tamil Short Film

Understanding the core content: How the news media exploit the viewers and victims for TRP

Appreciation and critique:

I appreciate the Varundhigirom (Sorry) Tamil Short Film’s crew for making a film with the available resources and cleverly picking the concept which can be shot in this pandemic situation too. Though the film was shot in everyone’s own house, the concept is unique and reflects the present model that all news media channels use. As usual, every film’s important element is the title, and this film also somewhat attracted me to watch and urged me to know about the story. I was impressed with the thumbnail or you can call it a poster. It was well designed and attractive.

Though the Varundhigirom (Sorry) Tamil Short Film was shot with so many hindrances, it can be made even better. The crew could have done even more technical works to make it even more attractive. I was not satisfied with the script and the screenplay. I felt like the team converted a script exactly into a filming phase. That doesn’t work properly. I wanted to make few things clear in this script. TheVarundhigirom (Sorry) Tamil Short Film’s description says that the story is about a girl who disappeared in the forest located in America and she is from Tamilnadu, India. From the beginning director Sathyarajkumar focusing on News media. In the beginning, the newsreader mention TN’s former chief minister’s name which felt a bit awkward. Because in the cine media, there are ethics that no directors will use real personality’s name without their concern. Using a name of a popular personality felt a bit unethical to this script. Followed by that the newsreader briefly explains about a piece of news that girl named Rama disappeared and for that, the news channel is arranging a debate show. Could you imagine what if the real news media have done this? They won’t do. So, I felt the script is a bit unstable. But in the end, Rama asks questions that why news media is not showing things that are very important to tell the viewers. She says that everyone should know about children who are kidnapped, citizens who are disappeared and there are so many things to care about, and news media making a piece of small news into a piece of big news for its TRP. This is the core content of the story. But in the description, it was the story of the disappeared girl. The screenplay is good, but it had some lag in some areas in the interview scenes.

It is very difficult to find the plot of the Varundhigirom (Sorry) Tamil Short Film. We can somewhat predict the plot where the disappeared girl was found. Now we can speak about the acting skills of every artist. Everyone is good enough to act in the script and according to the director’s wish but for the screen presence, their acting is not enough to attract the audience. If they are going to pursue their career in acting, they have to improve a lot, and that every artist should know what exactly the next scene is going to come and the director should explain to them what is going to come next so that the artists can imagine and act according to the script. In the debate scene, the screen felt very artificial and there was so much lag on this screen presence. The role is very clear and the dialogues are very clear and I should appreciate the clarity of their scene, but the way it was carried is not satisfying for me because the editing and the lagging in-between frames are not enough to attract me and it made me feel bored. The choices of the debate group and the controversy are interesting, and the point was attractive enough to move the film to the next stage, but I’m not satisfied with the technical aspect of this scene. In the last climax before the title card, the news reporter says that she’s going to connect with Rama through Skype, but the screen shows as a WhatsApp call. This is the scene that disturbed me a lot till the end and also when the reporter asks the team to disconnect the call and that particular acting was very artificial and not naturally exhibited.

The music was good enough, but it was a bit high volume and the range of that music was a bit high which made my ears strain. This is my suggestion to the music director Srikanth Devarajan of this film that certain movies are made for theatres, certain movies are made for OTT platforms and certain movies are made for YouTube channels. The film crew and the music director should be aware of what could be the scenario when the audience hears music through either earphones, a headset, or through home theatres. The suggestion is when the movie is made for YouTube channels the most audience will hear that through earphones it may be high-quality earphones or fewer quality earphones, but the music should not strain their ears and the range should be in control and shouldn’t be boosted. Apart from this suggestion, I have nothing to criticize about the music. The arrangements were good. The music is good, and the sound effects are good.

The film crew used green screens for news reporters, and it was a very good initiative that they put in so much effort to make it as real as possible despite this Covid pandemic. The dialogues are good and I’m satisfied with the dialogues. Congratulations to the film crew for making a film with a good script and I don’t say that film is good, but at the same time, I don’t say that this is a bad film. Apart from mini hindrances the film team made a film and released it. That is what the spirit and hope of the team are going to make sure to make the next film with a lot of admiring elements. All the best to the film crew and heads up.
