Understanding the core: Open-up oneself through books

Appreciation and Critic:

The best advantage of this short film is its time. Making a film with less time duration will trigger most of the audience to watch. Next is the content that the film had and the way it was narrated is good. Another main advantage of this film is that it had no dialogues or language. So, anyone can watch this film and understand the concept. Though the film is four minutes long, the review is going to be short and limited.

The director who also had done the other technical works in this film has done within the room. So, he cannot possess expensive equipment.

The content was good enough. But the script is not something very new to people’s minds. I can take it as teaching the same alphabets to the new joiners in a school for their kindergarten. Exploring something new in the lockdown and through books is nothing but routine advice or suggestion that everyone can give. Making it as a film makes no difference from giving a piece of advice. If we’re making a film with universal advice, we have to make it more technically attractive or visually impressive to the audience. Only then it can have value among the audience or the new viewers. Making a film with universal advice without attractive editing attractive screen presence makes no attention over the film.

The angles and camera frames are good, but the quality of the camera is not enough to convey the common content. Apart from the cinematography and editing music is the one which was added manually. I’m also not satisfied with the music because the expectation and the standard that I’m expecting from a filmmaker is more than creating elements, creativity is what is important for a film. I’m not impressed by the music even though it was created, and I feel like somewhere I heard the same music as horror sounds. So, I am not impressed by the music.

If I want to speak about the acting skill of the protagonist in Unlocking Tamil Short Film Review, I’m satisfied to set a certain level. Because of the content, the platform to act is limited. So, I cannot see such mesmerizing acting skills with the protagonist. At the end of the content, he took a book and smelled the book. This part alone I left so much because every book lover knows the reason why to smell a book. It is a popular trade that smelling a book is also a kind of addiction for book lovers and the smell of the paper is very raw. Bringing it on the screen was an intelligent act. Later, the director shows the outside world and it is not pointing exactly to trees but the whole ground. In the end, the director says that books are the brave kids off trees. Here, I’m a bit confused as to why a director showed that a person is inside a room, locked himself, roaming inside his room and suddenly took a book and felt like he found something and then later he put the quote at the end that books are the brave kids of trees.

Unlocking Shortfilm Review - lockdown effect

Till I see the quote I thought that the film is trying to convey that one must-read books to unlock himself. But the quotes are confusing because the story is about books on trees. As an audience, I felt that the director did not clearly show what he tries to convey to the audience. If the story is about the books he should have started the film with frames showing books and the frame often should showcase the books or at the end, he should have shown only the trees not the entire ground with trees. So here the director missed specifying what he tried to explain.

Also in the middle of the movie, he was trying to do something and he felt like he was bored. So I thought the movie was released during the lockdown and the director was about to show what to do during the lockdown. So I understood like he tries to convey to the audience that during lockdown read books and that is what he filmed too. But, in the end, the quote confused me a lot.

Apart from these critics, the film was good at the effort that Manoj Deshpande took and also the music by Devon Church. Congratulations to the team for making a film and also I wish that Manoj should direct many films with interesting stories.
