The Broken Pencils is an Indonesian family drama short film Directed by Angkasa Ramadhan. The stability of mind and a piece of love has bloomed from our childhood.

A broken pencil of the first frame depicts how broken the protagonist of the film, a little kid. The unstable economy of a poor family is the crisis of the plot written & produced by Rien al-Anshari.

If the pencils get sharpened it would end soon. If it doesn’t sharpen how I can write my homework are the recursive thoughts running in the mind of the male kid of the film. The way the protagonist of the film is a kid adds charm to the movie. He has a big brother in his family and his only family. Temporarily devastated brother’s performance satisfies the audience his workload, life has made him itself. And he is worried about his little brother’s immobile activity. Have failed to notice the little brother’s dejected mind is the base story of the film.

The Broken Pencils film has nearly two shots displaying the action of a rooster. The rooster’s stand in its single leg conveys the biased mind of the child. Innocence look and yearning attention of the kid steals the heart of the movie watchers. A mathematical homework of question, “seventeen chicken being and ten chicken sneaked inside the coop,” the child needs to find the solution of the count of the chicken doesn’t sneak in the coop. A problem the film has made to convey could be found by the action of a big brother.

When the big brother warns the small brother to go to the school obediently & not to roam around the school, all the little kid expects love and compassion from his family. A scene where he walks to the class when the group of children run across him with a Chao shows the silence of the kid’s life. Looking at his broken pencil at the end of the film, either he doesn’t care to sharpen it or borrow an extra pencil from his friends. His yearning for how good the pencils his friends have doesn’t dishearten him much than the lost love from his big brother.

Using headphones can add a pleasant experience while watching. Music by Bimo Nawandana Putra and Sound Designing by Andrew Saputro’s collaborated work adds beauty to the film.

The life of an adult is sculpted from the paternal behaviors and compassion of his family. Not a pencil is broken to throw away but a kid’s heart too, to get to be repaired with requisite emotion.
