About Noolu Malayalam Short Film:

Understanding the core: Explaining the comfort of a small poor boy

The first frame itself attracted me as a whole. The title card with the top-angle frame, with the elements a bridge over a river, a boy, a person from the opposite side crossing each other. The music for that frame and the birds chirping were very interesting. We can enjoy the visual as well as the sounds. It was a very well shot.

The boy is actually whistling for the chirping of that cuckoo. Cuckoo is also replying back for his whistling. This particular element is kind of fairytale and admirable. A cuckoo is replying through a human is not a possible thing, and even if it is possible, not everyone can see that. But the director wanted to make this concept to exhibit the happiness of the protagonist boy. The boy feels happy whenever the cuckoo is chirping, and he is replying. That is the main plot of this film. The core concept depends on this cuckoo chirping and the boy. Cuckoo here is a sound of happiness.

The upcoming frames of the boy show how poor he is. The frame of his shirt, slipper, and toned bag shows the poverty of the boy. But here, we can only assume but not confirm.

The background score for this Noolu Award Winning Malayalam Short Film is very interesting and very pleasant to hear too. Nowhere did it feel awkward or disturbing. The mix and the layers in the background were very neat. As well as the dubbing was very clear. No dialogues interrupted. No disturbance. No noise. No unbearable ambiance. Everything was well-prepared. It seems like the whole team made great teamwork and did a great job.

Here comes the scene where some staff of that school comes to give an announcement about an offering from a philanthropist. Here every child in the classroom is looking at the protagonist boy because of his appearance and poor uniform. He felt disgusting while everyone was looking at him. That evening while returning home, the boy felt unhappy, and here the cuckoo started chirping. But the boy is not replying. This symbolizes that he is not in a happy mood. Again, the cuckoo plays the role of the symbol of happiness. The boy in a bad mood started playing. The moment was captured very well. Honestly speaking, the acting of that boy is very impressive. He very well exhibits his acting skill. The protagonist character is an innocent, silent boy. Innocence is very well conveyed through the boy’s actions.

I have to appreciate the director for organizing a crowd and making them act. During the offering scene, while taking a photo, the pose of the teacher, adjusting his mustache was very natural. Everything was very natural. After the boy received that gift from that person, he wore it and went to school. There the way of conveying that everyone looked at him, the lens they used is interesting. From a normal view, it is attractive. He made a decision not to wear new slippers, uniforms, and bags. In the end, he heard the chirping of that cuckoo again while he was stitching his old uniform shirt. The surprise is that he replied to the cuckoo by whistling happily. Again, it conveyed that his comfort was within his own shirt and his own slippers in spite of his poverty. That is where the film wants to convey that everyone is comfortable with their own materials and also the life of a poor child.

The only thing that was disturbing is that during the evening he was washing his clothes in the river. And throughout the Noolu Malayalam Short Film, the director didn’t want to show us the caretaker of the protagonist. What if the director showed, and then there would be a question about his poverty. But though, if the director included someone in the place of a caretaker, it would have been better. That is all I felt from my side. At the same time, if you ask me to give ratings,

For story and screenplay – 8/10

For direction – 9/10

For cinematography – 9/10

For music and sounds – 9/10

For creativity – 8/10

And the overall rating for this film would be 9/10
