After watching the Agam (The Soul Tamil Short film), I felt something great and I think that is what a film needs. Despite being revolutionary in love concepts, this film touched the critical mindset of the audience. For a good short film, the important or necessary elements exist already which made this film an expected output. From the beginning, this film nowhere disappointed me as an audience. The director or the writer had done it in a very great manner. And the most important element which needs to be appreciated is the screenplay which is outstanding. One of the major supports in this film is the screenwriter. If not the screenwriter, the output would not have been this much.
Core understanding: Change in our perspective is what need of the time
All the aspects and technical things that worked on this film ended in a great way.
Agam (The Soul Tamil Short film) Storyline
Everytime when we watch a love story, we may find it cliche sometimes and sometimes it’ll have the same plot and same core. Audiences always expect new concepts and new plots which trigger their emotions deeply. I believe that the strength of a short film is the duration and the enormous accessibility to story even if it is short. The shorter the story is, the more the benefit it will have. And at the same time, I believe restrictions in making a short film is the procurement of resources, duration of the film and the post promotion.
This short film managed somehow to stay between the line of restriction and procurement. The core message of the film was conveyed very neatly. There are a lot of interesting elements that I felt while watching the film. Director Hari Vignesh had done a good job. So basically the script is a linear script. There are chances that we could see the core of this film in any other feature film as a shorter scene. But writing something on it and making it as a short film was good.
I loved the character designs which are portrayed and especially the girl child character. She was cute and at the same time annoying the most throughout the movie. This character is what the major object to be considered in the film. A child’s life or a child’s world is very simple as far as we know. No such critical issues and no such pressure. The character of the child is what the major philosophy or the message which the story wanted to convey. I believe the same thing the director also wanted to convey. Though each one will understand the story and take what is necessary for them.
The plot of the story starts at the very first scene for this linear script. The protagonist was struggling to get out of the guilt which was deteriorating him. His friend who is supportive to him was also trying to compromise him and backing him but still he doesn’t want to come out of that guilt. The story is all about how he comes out from guilt. I’m not sure how director Hari Vignesh decided to do this script, but that decision was a good one if you ask me. I love the way the final scene was made. When the protagonist found the address of the man who died in his car, he reached the woman in the house, it ended up in suspense. It is good that it was suspenseful. It made me think about the story of that woman, what will be her reaction after seeing him? and who is she to the dead person? are the thoughts which rouse. Marketing a film inside people’s brains is one of the good tricks used widely.
Agam (The Soul Tamil Short film) narration
One of the major objects used to pull the protagonist from guilt is the fish. I would be happy if the dialogues are well written in that crucial moment. The scene conveyed what it wanted to, but not the dialogues. Actually through the film the dialogue was a bit blunt and not enough complementary to the scene. From my judgment, I would say that dialogues are not written by a writer. And if that is a yes, I would suggest the team hire a writer and write dialogues. If not, the writer who wrote dialogues should focus more on his dialogue writing skills.
Cinematography was done very neatly and in a good manner. DOP Sivakumar has done an excellent job. If you see the first short is where a man was lying in the road and the blur and real light streak effect from his back. It is not easy to show the object clearly when the light is at back. My impression of DOP was good at the first short itself. Followed by that, the front- walk was cool. The actor/Protagonist had done justification to the role and was good enough to act. Though he needs to improve a lot on a few emotions like disappointment, surprise, fear he did a good job when we overall. I love the way Sivakumar manages to show the character in a deep way and his lighting is good throughout the film.
Music was good enough and it was merged with the screen. I believe that good music should gel with the screen and should not stand out separately while watching. People should feel for the story and unconsciously for the music. In that way, Harish has done a good job. But as a critic, I will expect more elements in music. But it could also be a part of the director’s blueprint.
DI for the film was good. But cannot find anything interesting in this film, but at the same time nothing there to write bad about it. It was good. Keshav had done a good job in DI. Tom on editing too completed well for the script. The cuts are precise and good. Dubbing for the film could have been even better. Dubbing means, the throw of the sound felt a bit lower than the visual. Similarly, somewhere here and there the audio was deep while the in the screen distance was far. Other than a few areas, the film was a good film to suggest to others.
I always focus on creativity while writing a review/critic. In that way, I find no creativity that needs to be mentioned. But innovation was there. All the best for the team to do more good scripts as AGAM and shine in this industry.
