One of the most beautiful things about a world class film is the depth of the characters. Memorable characters make a great movie. Dancing Rose, Daddy, mariamma, Raman, Thaniga…Each character is distinct, unique and do justice to their roles. Once in a while there is a movie that manifests the efforts of all of the technicians that work in the movie.The movie may look like Rocky or a Jean Claude Van damme movie, but I loved it. I got charged up after seeing the fight scenes and the techniques of each fighter.
After all, it is not Maan Karate or Badri. It is a period sports drama that inter twines people’s lives with the political scene of the era. Those who research the boxing scene of the times and the emergency period would be able to appreciate little nuances that run in parallel.

It is surprising to see that Ranjith has only taken up caste politics in a very subtle manner. The movie is upbeat and could be considered a true blue sports movie.
It could be an individual’s fight against his own demons. It may also be considered the sub-culture of North Madras populace and how their lives had violence, politics, oppression and crime to distract them from their resolve. Special mention about the strong women characters in the families. That’s an added feather to the cap of Ranjith.
The courageous wife who doesn’t abandon him even when he hits rockbottom and the mom who can’t stand the loser attitude of his son are great examples of actual women roles. Sanchana Natarajan gets one opportunity to show her histrionics and she does well.And Arya looks like a tree trunk

Ranjith has always been a director who wants to change the narrative of the greats.He renounced Raja Raja Cholan, and in Sarpatta Parambarai, he wants to humanize MGR.
