The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar – Movie Review

“The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” marks the initial installment in a series of anticipated collaborations between Roald Dahl and Wes Anderson, set for release on Netflix. It effortlessly combines the distinctive elements of both creators, delivering a blend of whimsy, amusement, and the signature visual uniqueness that characterizes their work.

Wes Anderson maintains his trademark color palette even in this short film “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar”, consistent with his distinct style seen across his body of work. The cinematic elements, like characters breaking the fourth wall and making direct eye contact with the audience, are very much in line with Anderson’s established approach. This works particularly effectively in this short film, given its layered narrative structure.

Following Fiennes’ opening narration, Cumberbatch, a newcomer to Anderson’s works, assumes the role of the titular character and begins narrating Dahl’s story. The character is a wealthy but unpleasant man who has never known the rigors of work.

His encounter with a book recounting a doctor (Patel) meeting a man (Kingsley) with an extraordinary ability to see without using his eyes sets the stage for a story within a story. This narrative technique, reminiscent of the postmodern classic Don Quixote and previously used by Anderson in “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” adds depth to the film.

While the complexity of this narrative might seem daunting, Wes Anderson masterfully navigates it, ensuring each character stands out distinctly. Naturally, Anderson’s signature visual aesthetics shine through, but the key to the short’s success lies in the exceptional cast.

While all the actors deliver impressive performances, Benedict Cumberbatch, portraying Henry Sugar, truly shines. Fans are already aware of his talent, but it’s the way his eyes captivate the audience, drawing them into the story and taking them on this remarkable journey, that makes “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” truly exceptional.

The narrative of the movie “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” conveys a positive message about the impact of individual actions for the better, and it’s peppered with numerous comedic moments that are genuinely side-splitting, the kind that will have you laughing uncontrollably. It’s thrilling to anticipate more Dahl short stories being added to Anderson’s Henry Sugar film anthology in the future. Click here to watch movie now.
