Positive reviews

Kangana Ranaut, a National Award-winning actress, delivers an outstanding performance in “Chandramukhi 2.” She perfectly embodies the character of Chandramukhi, showcasing remarkable screen presence and a captivating appearance. Her dancing skills are also impressive.

One of the film’s strengths lies in the refined backstory of Chandramukhi. The makers made adjustments to the original story to better suit Kangana’s portrayal of the titular role. The second-half drama is executed competently, and Raghava Lawrence, portraying the role of Vettaiyan, delivers a convincing performance filled with conviction.

The film features a brilliantly choreographed action sequence towards the end, featuring Kangana and Lawrence. Both actors display intense performances in this action set piece. Additionally, the emotional scenes in the movie are executed effectively. Surprisingly, Lakshmi Menon’s role is noteworthy, and she excels in her performance.

Critical Reviews

The main drawback of “Chandramukhi 2” is its lack of thrilling moments. It falls short in providing the expected spooky and eerie atmosphere that is essential for a horror film, even excluding jump scares. These crucial elements are notably absent in this sequel, disappointing fans of the franchise who were looking for thrills.

The film leans heavily towards drama, which might disappoint fans who were anticipating more horror elements. The first half of the movie feels disjointed, with random scenes that don’t contribute to the overall narrative. While comedy was a highlight in the original “Chandramukhi,” it becomes a significant drawback in “Chandramukhi 2.”

Vadivelu’s character is cliched, and the outdated, over-the-top comedy can be quite annoying for the audience. Additionally, the poorly written love track adds to the film’s negative aspects. Retaining the original “Vaarai” track might have been a better choice, as the new version lacks impact.

Apart from a few alterations in the backstory, the screenplay format remains largely the same as the original. While the first film succeeded in building tension, this sequel lacks a sense of urgency and often feels flat. Trimming down several portions in the first half could have improved the pacing.

Review on Technical Aspects

M.M. Keeravani’s background score made an attempt to elevate the film, but the blame for the lack of thrilling scenes falls on the writing department. The cinematography by Rajasekhar is passable, with appreciable set work. However, the VFX portions are subpar, and the editing could have been better.

Director P. Vasu’s work in “Chandramukhi 2” is just okay. While he added some drama to Chandramukhi’s backstory, the screenplay and the inclusion of silly comedy scenes in the first hour had a negative impact. It’s also surprising to see how the horror element takes a back seat in the film.

Final Thoughts

In summary, “Chandramukhi 2” has its moments, particularly in the second half, which is an improvement over the first. The original story has been tweaked slightly, and Kangana Ranaut delivers an impressive performance, with Lawrence also making his mark in the role of the king. However, the film falls short in delivering the thrilling moments expected from a horror film. The inclusion of silly comedy and the issues in the first half are its main drawbacks. “Chandramukhi 2” isn’t a bad film, but it also fails to reach the memorable status of the first installment, making it a somewhat average watch.
