Mark Antony is a character deeply ingrained in the memory of Tamil film enthusiasts, primarily due to Raghuvaran’s memorable portrayal in Rajinikanth’s ‘Baassha,’ where he became one of the most formidable antagonists. Fast forward to 2023, and Vishal, along with director Adhik Ravichandran, aims to capitalize on the enduring popularity of the Mark Antony character. Just as ‘Baashha’ is renowned for its exceptional performance by SJ Suryah, ‘Mark Antony’ will also be remembered for his outstanding portrayal.
Antony (played by Vishal) and Jackie Pandian (portrayed by SJ Suryah) are inseparable friends and prominent gangsters in the city of Chennai. Together, they exert their control over Chennai through their involvement in criminal activities. Unfortunately, their rival Ekambaram (Sunil) harbors a grudge against Antony for the murder of his brother. Ekambaram hatches a scheme and successfully eliminates Antony in a bar. This tragic event leaves Jackie as the sole remaining gangster, and he takes on the responsibility of raising Antony’s son, Mark.
At the same time, Chiranjeevi (played by Selvaraghavan) is engaged in the development of a time-travel device, in the form of a phone. This device ultimately leads him to Antony. Chiranjeevi successfully deciphers the time-travel phone, intending to alter his own past to resurrect his mother and confront his father. When Antony and Jackie come into possession of this unique phone, they too express their interest in using it to change their own pasts.
Adhik Ravichandran, a notable figure in the Tamil film industry, previously gained recognition for his film ‘Trisha Illana Nayanthara.’ Following that success, his subsequent projects did not achieve similar acclaim. However, ‘Mark Antony’ has the potential to restore his reputation. This time-travel gangster movie is an eccentric and lively experience. The film’s strengths lie in SJ Suryah’s exceptional acting, GV Prakash’s musical compositions, and the humorous elements.
The film ‘Mark Antony’ is not without its shortcomings, consistently reminding the audience not to expect logic in such a narrative. The time-travel phone’s limited functions, detailed in a diary by Chiranjeevi, conveniently change according to the demands of the screenplay. Despite these issues, the movie possesses a strong core story, punctuated with theatrical moments by Adhik. Whether it’s the interval sequence, Jackie’s interactions with his son, or the climax, the film provides entertainment through its quirky one-liners. However, the screenplay becomes somewhat excessive in the second half and could benefit from more conciseness.
While Vishal plays the leading role, it’s SJ Suryah who delivers a standout performance, showcasing remarkable versatility. He’s credited as the “Nadipu Arakan” (acting beast), and he certainly lives up to this title in the film. Although Vishal does his best, his performance doesn’t match Suryah’s effectiveness. Sunil, portraying Ekambaram, also demonstrates his prowess as one of Telugu cinema’s finest performers.
However, ‘Mark Antony’ does have some problematic elements. The treatment of Ritu Varma’s character, the stereotypical behavior of Silk Smitha’s character, and Y Gee Mahendran’s portrayal all contain stereotypes that could have been avoided in the context of contemporary filmmaking.
