The role of Batman is highly coveted by actors, and playing this iconic character has often propelled their careers to new heights within one of the most significant franchises in the film industry. Throughout the years, several actors have donned the cape and cowl, including Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale, and Ben Affleck. Now, Robert Pattinson is set to take on the role in Matt Reeves’ upcoming film, “The Batman.”
With each new iteration of the franchise, numerous actors are considered or approached for the role, adding an intriguing dimension to the character’s potential portrayals on screen. It’s fascinating to explore the diverse range of actors who were almost chosen to play the role of Batman.
The Role of Batman -10 Actors Who Were Almost in the Cast
Armie Hammer
Armie Hammer faced misfortune when he secured the role of Batman in George Miller’s Justice League Mortal during the 2000s. Despite positive script feedback, a writer’s strike in 2007-2008 halted production, thwarting Hammer’s opportunity to portray Batman in the film alongside the rest of the Justice League.
Joaquin Phoenix
Following Tim Burton’s Batman series, Warner aimed to reinvent the character, returning to its darker origins with Darren Aronofsky slated to direct a film based on Batman: Year One. Seeking guidance from comic legend Frank Miller, Aronofsky envisioned a unique take on Batman’s origins, where he’d rise without Wayne fortune and with an unconventional mentor. Joaquin Phoenix was considered but the project never materialized.
Collin Farrell
Before Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins, a different project was well underway, with a script by Akiva Goldsman and Wolfgang Petersen as the director. This storyline involved the role of Batman and Superman facing off due to Lex Luthor’s manipulation, endangering Lois Lane and Superman’s unborn child. Collin Farrell was cast as Batman, and Jude Law as Superman, though their character interpretations were uncertain. Unfortunately, this film was shelved in favor of Nolan’s vision.
Jake Gyllenhaal
During the casting for the role of Batman Begins, numerous actors in their late 20s and early 30s were strong contenders due to the role’s physical demands. Notable names like Henry Cavill auditioned, but the ultimate decision came down to a close call between Christian Bale and Jake Gyllenhaal. Christian Bale won the role, leading to the acclaimed Nolan Trilogy, while Jake’s sister Maggie played Rachel Dawes in a more assertive portrayal of the character.
Ethan Hawke
In 1995, for Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever, Ethan Hawke was considered for the role of Batman. Despite the film’s commercial success, it received mixed critical reviews. Ultimately, Val Kilmer portrayed Batman, and Jim Carrey played The Riddler. Hawke was offered the role after Michael Keaton’s initial refusal but declined due to concerns about potential typecasting. Hawke has excelled in action roles, as seen in “24 Hours to Live,” suggesting he could have been a fitting Batman.

Cillian Murphy
Cillian Murphy was in the running for Christopher Nolan’s the role of Batman in The Dark Knight trilogy, which achieved massive success. Ultimately, Christian Bale secured the part, as Nolan believed he embodied the perfect blend of darkness and light required for the character. During auditions, Murphy tried out for Bruce Wayne but was instead offered the role of the Scarecrow, fitting for his talent in dark, edgy roles as seen in Peaky Blinders.
Josh Brolin
Before Ben Affleck was cast, Josh Brolin was offered the role of Batman in the 2016 DCEU blockbuster, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which brought together DC Comics’ iconic characters. The film stars Henry Cavill as Superman and eventually featured Ben Affleck as Batman. Brolin, known for his roles in Deadpool and the Avengers franchise, was a plausible choice given his track record in similar high-profile films.
Nicholas Hoult
In the 2022 Batman film directed by Matt Reeves, the lead role initially almost went to Nicholas Hoult before Robert Pattinson was cast. This movie aimed to depict a younger version of Batman, making Hoult, known for his success in action films like X-Men: First Class, a plausible choice for the role.
Pierce Brosnan
For Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film, Pierce Brosnan was a contender for the role of Batman before it went to Michael Keaton, alongside Jack Nicholson as The Joker. Brosnan declined the role, citing his reluctance to portray a comic book character. Initially, audiences were skeptical of Keaton’s casting due to his comedy background, making Brosnan appear as a more probable choice.
Heath Ledger
In the early stages of Batman Begins, Heath Ledger tried out for the role of Batman, but Christopher Nolan didn’t see him fit for it. Ledger’s eventual casting as The Joker in The Dark Knight initially faced fan skepticism. However, Nolan recognized Ledger’s untapped acting potential, leading to a historic portrayal of The Joker, widely regarded as one of the best in the character’s history.
