Directors Taika Waititi and Shawn Levy are poised to make a substantial impact on the Star Wars franchise in the future. While Waititi’s Star Wars project appears to be in the early stages of development and may take some time to materialize, he is viewed as a promising addition to the franchise. Additionally, Waititi is concurrently involved in bringing the beloved anime Akira to life in a live-action adaptation, which has the potential to achieve success, given the recent achievements of Japanese franchises like One Piece on Netflix.

Both Taika Waititi and Shawn Levy are set to play significant roles in the future of Star Wars, though it appears their respective projects are at different stages of development. Levy recently confirmed his involvement in a Disney-owned Star Wars project before potential Hollywood strikes, indicating that he’ll likely resume work on it once those conflicts are resolved. In contrast, Waititi’s Star Wars project seems to face more uncertainty.

At the TIFF Tribute Awards, Waititi praised Levy and humorously compared the status of their Star Wars projects, saying, “Unlike me, let’s hope he manages to finish a script for that.”

Waititi is no stranger to the Star Wars universe, having contributed behind the scenes for The Mandalorian and voicing IG-11, a role that earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance. With his experience directing the two most recent Thor films and his track record in handling big franchises, even if it takes him more time to develop his Star Wars story, he remains a promising choice for the future of the saga.

While it’s not currently listed on Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming release schedule, Taika Waititi is still working on the development of a live-action Akira film. Waititi is set to direct this adaptation of the renowned cyberpunk anime, based on Katsuhiro Ōtomo and Izo Hashimoto’s manga, which was first brought to the screen in 1988 and gained a cult following. Warner Bros. Discovery is keen on delivering a live-action version of this iconic story.

The narrative unfolds in a dystopian alternative version of 2019 in Neo-Tokyo, a city built upon the ruins of the original Japanese city. The story revolves around Tetsuo, a young man with a troubled past, who becomes part of an experiment that grants him telekinetic powers following a motorcycle accident. These powers are similar to those of Akira, the young man responsible for the destruction of Tokyo in the late 80s.
