In a recent interview, actor Kamal Haasan revealed how he persuaded late performing icon Sivaji Ganesan to decline the National Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Thevar Magan (1992). Though Sivaji was universally recognized as the best actor India has ever produced, Thevar Magan was the first to give him the prestigious National Award.

I’m delighted to hear that my guru is receiving national recognition. For Sivaji Sir, Thevar Magan secured it. The fact Kamal felt that the popularity didn’t do justice to Sivaji’s expertise or stature because it was given in the supporting actor class, that infuriated me. I gave Sivaji Ganesan the order not to accumulate the prize.
“Why not?” he questioned me. I told him he could go pick up the Dadasaheb Phalke award there. Kamal Haasan said to Shivaji, “Let’s wait.”. In 1996, Sivaji Ganesan was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which is India’s highest honour within the area of cinema.

In Thevar Magan, the main character, Sakthivel Thevar, was portrayed by Kamal Haasan, and Sivaji Ganesan played his father, Periya Thevar. In addition to playing the lead and funding it under his own production company, Raaj Kamal Movies Worldwide, Kamal also penned the screenplay.
