An upcoming American fantasy television series called The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s book The Lord of the Rings and its appendices. The series, created by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay for the streaming platform Prime Video, is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, thousands of years before J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It is made by Amazon Studios in collaboration with the Tolkien Estate, the Tolkien Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema.

The Rings of Power: Plot
The series is based on author J.R.R. Tolkien’s history of Middle-earth and takes place thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The creation of the Rings of Power, the ascent of the Dark Lord Sauron, the collapse of the island realm of Nmenor, and the final union between Elves and Men are all key events covered in the book, which starts in a period of largely calm. In Tolkien’s original stories, these events occur over a long period of time, but the series has shortened them.

The Rings of Power: Trailer
In November 2017, Amazon paid 250 million USD for the television rights to The Lord of the Rings, committing to a five-season production that will cost at least 1 billion USD. It would then rank as the most expensive television programme ever produced. Despite this, the production aims to imitate the movies with similar production design, and a number of the big multinational cast of the series play younger versions of the movies’ characters. On September 2, 2022, the season is expected to make its Prime Video debut. The second season’s filming was scheduled to start in the middle of 2022.
