About Aarya Hindi Web Series

Understanding the Core

Aarya is a HotStar-featured thriller-web series that deals with women empowerment through a unique perception. It’s a story about how a woman is forced to step out into the dark world of drugs and the mafia in order to save her family.

Aarya Hindi Web Series Admiration and Criticism

Famed 90s & early 2000s actress and Miss World, Sushmita Sen makes her debut on the OTT web series platform and she has left the viewers awestruck with her powerful acting. Aarya is about a mother protecting her family. At least that’s what the simplest single plotline this web series can boast of. But the depth of this plotline is way too deep.

The Aarya Hindi Web Series story is about a family with an affluent background, but their riches have come through the lines of illegality. Aarya and her husband, Tej (Chandrachur Singh) seem to be very happy with their lives when the pilot episode surfaces. They live in a posh bungalow with their three kids. Tej is the chief executive officer of a pharmaceutical company that is also controlled by his brother-in-law Sangram and Jawahar, his friend. The pharmaceutical company has been inherited from Aarya’s father, and it has hidden shady business running beyond its factory machinery; They are involved in increasing the opium content in these medicines and selling it off illegally as a drug of leisure. Even though Tej is a man of integrity and goodwill, his other partners (Sangram and Jawahar) don’t share similar ideologies with him. Tej believes that everyone involved in this business is their family and hence no one should feel let down, he would increase equity shares without much thought of his own profit in order to keep the business lowkey and hidden from the eyes of the police, and even though the profits aren’t sky-high, their growth was steady. He has been running it for seventeen long years ever since his father-in-law suffered paralysis.

Sangram and Jawahar on the other hand, are always waiting to make more money in any way possible. They don’t really think seriously about the safety and risk, and this has irked Tej to a great extent. The show’s first big plot checkpoint occurs right because of Sangram, as it’s his action of acquiring 300 crore rupees worth of heroin from the grasps of a police raid that starts off all the troubles. Tej upon discovering the heroin in their own factory warehouse reprimands Sangram and pleads him to not get involved in such a dangerous business. However Sangram and Jawahar start arguing with Tej and they just want him to open the transport lines, but Tej doesn’t flinch at his decision. At that moment, the three of them get ambushed by two hitmen who try to shoot at them during their warehouse argument, but they are unable to get the job done. Tej discovers that these hitmen were sent by Shekhawat, a drug lord with whom his family had made a truce of peace when they started their illegal opium business seventeen years back. Apparently, the seized heroin belonged to Shekhawat, and Sangram had stolen it off, mistaking its owner to be Russian.

The three of them drive off to palace ruins where they hide the heroin, but Tej further gets involved in a heated exchange of words with Sangram, and Sangram threatens to put a bullet in Tej’s head if he doesn’t stop bickering. Tensions flaring, Tej has no way out but to be silent, and hence he secretly decides to make his way out of this business with his family in the coming future.

There’s also another case of tension running alongside the warehouse ambush, and it involves Tej and Aarya’s youngest son Adi. Adi steals his father’s gun from his car right before going to school and carries it secretly to his school. His motive for carrying the gun was to deal with his school bullies, who had forcefully taken his toys from him. The gun created a huge commotion in his school, and as a result, the principal rusticated Adi from the school without filing an FIR. Aarya has had enough of this dangerous business and frustrated with Tej’s ignorance (he was of course caught up amidst zooming bullets), she makes up her mind of serving Tej an ultimatum.

Tej upon arriving home at night receives another shock about his son’s misdeeds in school, and Aarya lets him know that if Tej is not leaving this illegal opium trading business, she would have no choice but to divorce him.

However, these scenes of a grim atmosphere were followed with delightful scenes of a wedding party. Aarya’s sister Soundarya was getting married and so these lighthearted scenes give the viewers a breath of fresh air. There is another backstory involving Aarya’s mother and father. Her father who’s well into enjoying retirement has found another younger woman to spend his time with, and as a result, this has created quite a turmoil in the family. His children have accepted it but his wife won’t let his mistress stand in her sight. However Aarya wittily manages to keep Radhika, her father’s mistress out of the wedding and so, her mother makes her presence felt during her daughter’s wedding. Such light-hearted scenes complemented the grim atmosphere of the entire show, and they are very much important in keeping a balance.

But the atmosphere we must remember is grim and serious. With the closure of a lighthearted scene, we must expect something serious or shocking. And that’s how my sixth sense came true! Sangram ends up getting arrested on the same night of the wedding. He was caught by the police who discovered a packet of heroin in his car’s glove box while they stopped him amid his drive to the expecting buyer. Jawahar thought that only three people knew about the heroin, and since he himself would never leak such information to anyone, it had to be Tej, the third person besides Sangram. Jawahar assaults Tej during the party and the party ends on a very sour note. Tej being a man of his word, stated that he would never be a snitch and leak out such delicate information with the police, and the viewers also believed it as I did for sure.

The next morning, Tej asks Aarya whether she is ready to join him and escape this caged life. He wants to leave everything behind and live a new life with his wife and kids. Aarya finally finds some relief and Tej tells her that he’s carving out an escape route from this dangerous life and they would soon embrace a life of peace and solitude.  But her relief is short-lasting, as the pilot episode ends with Tej getting fatally shot right in front of his house. Although the shooting was inevitably expected by most of the viewers, the director did really well in timing this climax for the entire episode. Tej survived an ambush already midway through the episode, and it did make the viewers think that Tej won’t really end up harmed in this story for a brief amount of time. But such an end for the episode though perfect was expected to a certain extent.

The direction is really impressive. The scenes through having contrasting motives are very well connected and the viewers stay embroiled throughout. Talking about the acting, I would like to congratulate the ever-elegant Sushmita Sen for such a power-packed performance. She played the role of a strong woman who’s also a wife, a mother, and a daughter at the same time, and her portrayal is gritty and inspiring. Her expressions of controlled agony and frustration while also keeping her duties up to mark is a treat to watch. Chandrachur Singh, who used to be the chocolate boy of the 90s’ Bollywood also captivates the viewers with his portrayal of a pious man caged up in the wrong business. The rest of the acting was also fabulous, as sheer professionalism was seen, and hence, there is a presence of rich class in this web series.

The screenplay and lighting have also been phenomenal. The grimness has been very well cast through the dark lighting and light-hearted scenes are also shown with some presence of darkness as it is giving the viewers a whiff of the future dangers the protagonist would be going through. The music is also well crafted, and it complements the atmosphere of this web series really well.

This show entices women’s empowerment in a different light. It’s the woman who’s sought as the protector of her family. The world of mafia and drugs is dangerous for anyone involved in it. And though we have seen heroes rescuing themselves and their loved ones from such crises. Looking at it through the other way round is such a refreshing yet gritty take is very much welcomed by this generation of OTT viewers who have seen the rise of feminism and women empowerment. Aarya proves her strength by holding strong and not breaking down when everyone expects her to. She epitomizes the true willpower of a woman and I feel really proud that such shows are becoming more and more frequent with the ever-rotating hands of a clock.
