“A Haunting in Venice” enjoyed a more successful opening weekend in international markets, generating an impressive $22.7 million in overseas box office earnings. This boosted the film’s total worldwide revenue to $37.2 million. In a direct confrontation, detective Hercule Poirot would find himself at a disadvantage when pitted against Valak, a fact that was reflected in the box office competition between their respective horror films. Even though Kenneth Branagh, the director, also plays the role of detective Hercule Poirot in “A Haunting in Venice,” the new movie failed to outperform “The Nun II” in terms of thrills and scares.

Remarkably, for the second consecutive weekend, the ninth installment of “The Conjuring Universe” reigns supreme as the highest-grossing film in the domestic box office. “The Nun II” narrowly clinched the top spot, earning $14.7 million, as reported by Box Office Mojo. Kenneth Branagh’s third installment in the Agatha Christie film series closely followed in the second position, with a box office collection of $14.5 million. “The Equalizer 3” secured the third spot, accumulating $7.2 million, while “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3” settled for fourth place with earnings of $4.7 million. The fifth position was claimed by “Barbie,” which brought in $4 million.

When comparing it to the two previous entries in the Agatha Christie trilogy, “A Haunting in Venice” outperformed “Death on the Nile,” which had a $12.9 million opening weekend in 2022. However, it still falls short of “Murder on the Orient Express,” which set the bar with an opening weekend earning of $28.7 million. If a fourth film in the series is approved, it will have to aspire to reach this benchmark.

“The Nun II” maintains its position as the number one movie in the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend, although its earnings have seen a significant 54.8% drop from its initial U.S. release, going from $32.6 million to $14.7 million. In contrast, its predecessor, “The Nun,” outperformed the sequel during its first two weekends in 2018, grossing $53.8 million and $18.2 million, respectively.

Nevertheless, “The Nun II” can be considered a box office success, given its estimated budget of $35 million to $40 million, as reported by Screen Rant. The film has performed exceptionally well internationally, accumulating $102.3 million in overseas markets during its first two weekends. Overall, the horror film has raked in a global total of $158.8 million so far.

The upcoming weekend promises to be quite interesting, with “Barbie” set to premiere in IMAX, and special previews already planned for Thursday, September 21. Additionally, “Expend4bles” is hitting theaters, but as of now, it’s projected to earn between $13 million and $18 million, potentially marking the lowest opening in the history of “The Expendables” franchise.
