10 Fake Character Deaths in Movies That Still Hurt

James Gordon — The Dark Knight (2008)

In Christopher Nolan’s second installment of the superhero trilogy, “The Dark Knight,” Batman, James Gordon, and Harvey Dent unite to defend Gotham City against the Joker. The Joker poisons Commissioner Loeb at the funeral, targeting Major Anthony Garcia next. However, Gordon intervenes, taking a bullet meant for the Mayor. Later, it’s unveiled that Gordon faked his death to safeguard his family. Despite this revelation, the emotional impact of the scene, especially the reactions of Gordon’s wife and children to the news, remains poignant with each viewing. Watch “The Dark Knight” on Max.

Juliet Capulet — Romeo + Juliet (1996)

This staged death is perhaps the least unexpected among the instances on this list, particularly given the widespread familiarity with William Shakespeare’s renowned tragedy. In the film adaptation of Romeo + Juliet, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, the story revolves around two young lovers thwarted by their feuding families. In a desperate bid to be together, Juliet ingests a potion that simulates death, intending to reunite with Romeo after escaping her apparent demise.

Tragically, miscommunication ensues as Romeo fails to receive Juliet’s message. Discovering what he believes to be her actual demise, he consumes poison within the church where Juliet lies, just as she awakens moments before his tragic end. The true heartbreak lies not in the feigned death itself but in Romeo’s anguished realization, understanding the irreversible nature of his actions. Watch Romeo + Juliet on Paramount+.

Dr. James Harvey — Casper (1995)

In the 1995 film “Casper” directed by Brad Silberling, Dr. James Harvey and his daughter Kat move into Whipstaff Manor with the mission of expelling the ghosts haunting the place. They encounter Casper, a friendly ghost, and the Ghostly Trio, Casper’s less friendly uncles. Initially, the relationship between Harvey and the trio is strained, and there’s even a moment when they consider a drastic plan to make Harvey a ghost like them.

However, as the trio observes a change in Harvey’s feelings, they decide to abandon their plan. Unfortunately, Harvey meets with a tragic accident and becomes a ghost himself. Witnessing Kat’s grief, Casper selflessly sacrifices his chance to return to life and allows Harvey to use a machine created by Casper’s father to bring the dead back to life. This decision leads to Harvey reuniting with his daughter in the land of the living. You can watch “Casper” on Netflix.

Sherlock Holmes — Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

In the 2011 film “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” the narrative takes a dramatic turn towards the end. As Sherlock Holmes endeavors to thwart Professor James Moriarty’s sinister plans, a pivotal moment unfolds. Faced with the imminent threat of Moriarty killing Watson and his wife, Holmes, realizing he cannot defeat his adversary in a physical confrontation, makes a daring choice. He clings to Moriarty and leaps off the balcony, plunging both of them into the waters of Reichenbach Falls, seemingly meeting their demise.

The apparent loss of the brilliant detective deeply impacts those around him. However, the sorrow is short-lived. Following Holmes’s funeral, there is a surprising twist. Sherlock reappears, bursting into Watson’s office. After perusing his friend’s memoirs, he adds a question mark next to “The End,” indicating that his adventures are far from over. Excitingly, recent updates from a Sherlock Holmes producer have confirmed that a third installment is in the works, emphasizing its priority for the filmmaking team. You can catch the movie on AppleTV.

Bucky Barnes — Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) delivered numerous heart-wrenching moments over its franchise, and one of the most shocking was Bucky Barnes’ apparent demise. In 2011, Captain America: The First Avenger introduced Chris Evans as the iconic superhero, battling Hydra alongside his best friend, Bucky.

In a gripping sequence, Bucky falls from a moving train, leaving Captain America and the audience in disbelief. This heartbreaking moment had fans mourning for years, as Bucky’s survival was only revealed in the sequel, The Winter Soldier, released three years later. Believing S.H.I.E.L.D. is compromised, Fury informs Steve Rogers of the danger but is shot by the Winter Soldier. Despite seemingly succumbing to the attack, it’s later revealed that Fury orchestrated his own death to clandestinely fight Hydra. His staged demise becomes a strategic move to support the anti-Hydra cause while remaining off the radar, highlighting Fury’s cunning and resilience. This memorable MCU moment can be enjoyed by streaming The Winter Soldier on Disney+.

Flynn Rider — Tangled (2010)

Historically, the romantic interests of official Disney Princesses didn’t always capture audience attention as much as the heroines did. However, this changed with the introduction of Flynn Rider in 2010’s Tangled. Flynn’s charm and good looks resonated globally, making his apparent death at the film’s end one of the most heart-wrenching moments in animated cinema.

When Rapunzel uncovers her true identity, Mother Gothel, driven mad, tries to keep her close to exploit her magical hair. She ruthlessly stabs Flynn as he climbs the tower to rescue Rapunzel. Heartbroken, Rapunzel agrees to stay with Gothel if she uses her magic to heal Flynn one last time. However, Flynn, understanding that this would condemn Rapunzel, cuts off her hair with a piece of glass. Without her magic, Gothel ages to ashes. Fortunately, the story concludes on a positive note as Rapunzel manages to revive Flynn just before losing her magic. You can watch Tangled on Disney+.

Baymax — Big Hero 6

Certainly! In the 2014 Disney film “Big Hero 6,” Baymax, an inflatable healthcare robot, is not a living being, so technically, he cannot experience death. However, a poignant moment occurs when, during a perilous mission, Baymax sacrifices himself to save Hiro, the film’s protagonist. This leads to a heart-wrenching separation between the two characters. Fortunately, the story takes a hopeful turn when Hiro discovers Baymax’s healthcare chip months later. He rebuilds Baymax from scratch, and the duo reunites to continue their mission of protecting the city from potential threats. You can watch “Big Hero 6” on Disney+.

Aragorn — The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Frodo Baggins’ quest to destroy the One Ring in the Lord of the Rings trilogy is fraught with peril, and despite having formidable allies, not all of them make it through unscathed.

In the 2002 film The Two Towers, there is a particularly poignant moment involving Aragorn. He faces a perilous situation when a warg violently pulls him off a cliff, seemingly leading to his demise. The fall is so severe that survival seems unlikely. However, against all expectations, Aragorn survives and continues to play a crucial role in the Fellowship of the Ring’s journey until the very end. You can watch The Two Towers on Max.

Harry Potter — Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2

For years, global fans anxiously followed the epic showdown between Harry Potter and Voldemort, speculating on the inevitable outcome of their battle for survival. The mystery was finally unveiled in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, a revelation that caught many non-readers off guard.

In a pivotal scene, Voldemort employs the deadly Avada Kedavra curse on Harry, seemingly ending the young wizard’s life. However, it’s later revealed that Harry didn’t truly perish but was transported to an intermediary realm. There, he encounters Dumbledore before returning to his body for a final confrontation with his nemesis.

Although Harry’s simulated demise is brief, the sequence where Hagrid carries his lifeless body is one of the most heart-wrenching moments in the entire film series. Experience the dramatic conclusion by streaming The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 on Max.
