Netflix is a groundbreaking streaming platform renowned for its vast content library and successful formula of producing original shows and movies. While some of its titles like “Stranger Things,” “Ozark,” “To All The Boys” trilogy, “All Quiet on the Western Front,” and “Marriage Story” have received critical acclaim, not all of its movies have enjoyed perfect reviews. Netflix is known for pushing creative boundaries and producing content that explores complex and controversial issues, something traditional studios might avoid. This approach has led to debates about the appropriateness and messaging of many Netflix originals, ranging from sensitive portrayals of teenage issues to unflinching depictions of real-world tragedies. Controversy, for better or worse, seems to be an integral part of the job for a service that has revolutionized television. This list highlights some of Netflix’s most talked-about projects.

The Most Controversial Netflix Original Films
Okja (2017)
Bong Joon-ho’s science fiction adventure film centers around Mija, a young girl who has cared for and protected her beloved companion, Okja, a genetically modified super pig, for a decade. They live in the remote mountains of South Korea to avoid interference, but when Okja grows to an unprecedented size, the unscrupulous multinational corporation, Mirando Corporation, seeks to take possession of the super pig. Mija must now take enormous risks to save her cherished friend.
Why the Film Sparked Controversy: Okja faced controversy for several reasons. Firstly, the film was originally intended to have a simultaneous release in theaters in the US, the UK, and South Korea, alongside its online debut. This decision sparked outrage among Korean viewers. Additionally, over 90% of theaters in South Korea refused to screen the film because of an issue related to its Cannes Film Festival screening. This decision was exacerbated by the fact that another film, Noah Baumbach’s “The Meyerowitz Stories,” which was also nominated for the Palme d’Or that year, was allowed to screen in France while Okja was not. Despite director Bong Joon-ho addressing these concerns, the film still faced criticism at the Cannes Film Festival when a technical glitch interrupted its screening.
To the Bone (2017)
“To the Bone,” directed by Marti Noxon and based on her personal experiences with eating disorders, centers around the life of 20-year-old Ellen, who has battled anorexia throughout her teenage years. Despite numerous attempts at recovery, she continues to struggle and ends up under the care of an unconventional doctor who encourages her on a journey of self-acceptance.
Regarding its controversy, the film features Lily Collins in the lead role of Ellen, earning praise for her performance. However, it faced criticism for potentially glamorizing eating disorders due to certain scenes providing a detailed portrayal of the disorder, which some argued could have a detrimental impact on viewers. Many also found the depiction to be overly simplistic and lacking depth.
The First Temptation of Christ (2019)
“The First Temptation of Christ,” a Brazilian satirical comedy that presents a modern reinterpretation of Jesus’ life, generated significant controversy upon its release. The 46-minute film caused an uproar among some Christians who believed it went too far in challenging their faith. The film’s controversial aspects include implying that Jesus is gay and depicting Mary as a cannabis user. Those who objected to the film engaged in intense debates, deeming the religious satire as highly provocative. However, when a judge ordered Netflix to remove the movie, the President of Brazil’s Supreme Court overturned the decision, asserting that humor alone is not potent enough to undermine Christian faith.
Amy Schumer: The Leather Special (2017)
“Amy Schumer: The Leather Special” marked the comedian’s second Netflix stand-up special, where she tackled a variety of topics such as feminism, relationships, sexuality, and life in her signature candid style. One notable aspect of the special was Schumer’s humorously claiming that every comedian goes through a phase of performing in “leather” attire, and now it was her turn.
The controversy surrounding the special arose from the perception that some of Schumer’s jokes went beyond humor and veered into offensive territory. While many acknowledged her quick wit and comedic talent, some audience members and critics questioned whether certain aspects of her humor were more about critiquing culture than providing appropriate comedy. This debate led to a concerted effort to lower the ratings of the special, prompting Schumer to respond officially on Instagram.
Girl (2019)
The controversial aspects of the movie “Girl” directed by Lukas Dhont revolve around several key points. To begin with, the casting choice of a cisgender actor, Victor Polster, to play the role of a 15-year-old trans girl, Lara, sparked considerable controversy and debate among the audience. Additionally, the film’s portrayal of gender dysphoria, self-harm, and its handling of trans-related issues were criticized for being outdated and regressive. Despite these controversies, the film is recognized for its role in facilitating ongoing discussions about transgender and LGBTQ+ topics and is considered one of the noteworthy LGBTQ+ movies available on Netflix.

Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
Adapted from J.D. Vance’s memoir and directed by Ron Howard, “Hillbilly Elegy” tells the story of a Yale Law student who returns to his hometown in Middletown, Ohio, in response to an urgent call. Back home, he confronts the multi-generational history of his family as they strive to break free from a cycle of poverty, violence, and addiction.
The controversy surrounding the film arises from its portrayal of Appalachian communities and disadvantaged rural white individuals as victims of economic challenges and substance abuse. Some critics accused the movie of relying on stereotypes. Furthermore, it was criticized for seemingly aiming for Oscar recognition, and reviews of the performances by Glenn Close and Amy Adams were mixed.
Cuties (2020)
Cuties, the thought-provoking directorial debut by Maïmouna Doucouré, tells the story of Amy, an 11-year-old girl from a conservative family in a rural area of Paris. Struggling with the challenges of adolescence and feeling disenchanted with her Islamic upbringing, Amy becomes fascinated by a group of rebellious girls her age who are part of a twerking dance crew. She joins them in an attempt to “fit in,” which leads her into a web of drama.
What Made It So Controversial Few Netflix releases have generated as much controversy as Cuties. The film sparked a major uproar due to its portrayal of young girls. It includes scenes featuring underage girls performing suggestive dance routines, which led to accusations from viewers who felt the film was promoting the exploitation of children. Critics argued that the movie had crossed ethical boundaries, and the audience supported this notion by shedding light on the disturbing reality faced by many girls growing up in a society with hypersexualized influences.
365 Days (2020)
Based on the first installment of a trilogy penned by Blanka Lipińska, 365 Days is a provocative and sensual Netflix movie that delves into the love story of Laura, an ordinary Polish sales director, and Massimo, a dangerous mafia boss from Sicily. Laura finds herself in a perilous situation when a seemingly innocent vacation in Sicily leads to her abduction by Massimo. He gives her a year to fall in love with him.
Why It Stirred Controversy To begin with, the film’s storyline is highly implausible. By adhering to the problematic premise of the source material, 365 Days ended up containing a substantial amount of explicit sexual content, which, to some extent, romanticized and glamorized abusive relationships. It portrayed unhealthy relationship dynamics and paid little heed to the concept of consent. As a result, it fell into the rare category of movies with a 0% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Despite this, it remained in Netflix’s top offerings for several weeks following its release, leading to the creation of a sequel, The Next 365 Days, which was also heavily criticized by reviewers.
Dave Chappelle: The Closer (2021)
Dave Chappelle’s latest comedy special, “The Closer,” aimed to address past criticism regarding his jokes about LGBTQ+ rights and the transgender community. However, despite his well-intentioned efforts, the special sparked significant controversy. This was primarily because Chappelle’s words did not convey his intentions effectively. He touched on sensitive topics such as transgender identities and referenced a friend who tragically took her own life, which only exacerbated the situation. Instead of achieving clarity, his comments ventured into more offensive territory, even leading to an employee group walking out in protest.
Blonde (2022)
The captivating biographical drama “Blonde,” featuring Ana de Armas, presents a fictionalized account of Marilyn Monroe’s life, delving into her journey to stardom, struggles with identity, deteriorating mental health, and the various relationships that influenced her life. Throughout the narrative, we witness the transformation of Norma Jeane Mortenson into one of the world’s most iconic stars.
The controversy surrounding “Blonde” was evident from the moment its trailer was released. The film’s unvarnished depiction of Marilyn Monroe’s life and the trauma she experienced received a mixed response from viewers. While Ana de Armas delivered a brilliant performance, director Andrew Dominik faced accusations of exploiting the portrayal of a public figure’s life.
Critics argued that the movie perpetuated the very objectification that Marilyn Monroe endured during her lifetime. However, there was also a segment of the audience that appreciated the film for sparking discussions about mental health and the toll it exacts on a celebrity living in the public eye.
