Director Christopher McQuarrie defends the exposition-heavy approach in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, stating that without these explanations, the film would be confusing for some viewers. While he acknowledges the criticism regarding excessive exposition, he appreciates those who closely follow the dialogue. McQuarrie also explains that the decision to use artificial intelligence as the film’s villain was intentional, aimed at bringing freshness to the franchise by exploring a new kind of threat. Despite facing criticism, the movie is well-received, boasting a 96% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
During a conversation on the Empire Spoiler Specials podcast, Christopher McQuarrie, the director of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, addressed the criticism surrounding the film’s heavy use of explanatory dialogue.
The seventh Mission: Impossible film stars Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Nicholas Hoult, and Simon Pegg. In “Dead Reckoning Part One,” Ethan Hunt and the IMF team return. While the movie has received praise, some critics have pointed out that it contains a lot of exposition about its AI antagonist and human villain, as well as explanations about artificial intelligence.
In the movie, the AI antagonist, known as the Entity, and the human antagonist, Gabriel (played by Esai Morales), are prominently featured. However, some audience members have been put off by the extensive explanations about the Entity, its origins, abilities, and motivations. Nevertheless, the director of Jack Reacher believes that the film would have suffered without these explanations.

McQuarrie responded to criticism regarding the excessive exposition in the movie by acknowledging that he’s aware of it. He explained that if he removed all the exposition, it would lead to confusion for the audience. He commended those who noticed the repeated explanations, emphasizing that not everyone pays such close attention to the dialogue.
He further mentioned that the audience’s emotional engagement relies on the information they possess, and the challenge lies in hiding the necessary information within the storytelling. While some viewers appreciate the dialogue, others do not. McQuarrie expressed his willingness to improve but also noted that he wouldn’t change anything and wishes he could do better, given the circumstances.
In a previous conversation with Collider, McQuarrie explained the reasoning behind using artificial intelligence as the villain in the film. He mentioned that they had already explored various other types of villains in previous installments, such as nuclear threats, chemical threats, biological threats, and even mysterious elements like the Rabbit’s Foot. To keep the franchise fresh, they decided to focus on the emerging theme of technology and AI, a topic that was gaining significant attention.
Despite facing some criticism, Dead Reckoning Part One is widely regarded as one of the franchise’s standout entries, earning an impressive 96% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Unfortunately, the production of Dead Reckoning Part Two has been put on hold due to ongoing strikes in Hollywood. McQuarrie has stated multiple times that he and Tom Cruise are actively working on how to conclude Part Two, with its anticipated release date set for June 28, 2024.
