October is often associated with fear and horror, and this month, Netflix is releasing two notable pieces of content that criticize pharmaceutical companies for their profit-driven practices. First, there’s the genuinely frightening miniseries “The Fall of the House of Usher,” created by horror expert Mike Flanagan, known for “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Midnight Mass.” Later in the month, there’s “Pain Hustlers,” a movie that hasn’t received great reviews but is getting attention due to its star-studded cast, including Emily Blunt and Chris Evans. Additionally, there’s the teen drama “Everything Now” and new seasons of the French thriller “Lupin” and the animated comedy “Big Mouth.”

New Movies on Netflix in October 2023

Lupin Season 3 (October 5)

Staying incognito should be a breeze for Assane Diop, portrayed by Omar Sy, considering his expertise as a skilled gentleman thief and a master of disguise. However, this task becomes significantly more challenging in Lupin Season 3, as he finds himself as the most wanted person in France. This predicament is the result of his arch-nemesis Hubert Pellegrini, played by Hervé Pierre, framing him for a murder. In the first two seasons, the audience thoroughly enjoyed watching Assane effortlessly outsmart the wealthy and influential while skillfully evading capture. He almost resembles a magician, armed with an endless array of clever tactics. As the curtains prepare to rise on the third season, viewers can anticipate another captivating and mesmerizing chapter in Assane’s story.

Everything Now Season 1 (October 5)

This edgy, British teen comedy-drama follows a young woman who’s fresh out of treatment for an eating disorder and returns to high school looking to make up for lost time by checking things off her bucket list. Partying? Check. Breaking the law? Check. Sex? Check. Yes, even though she’s only missed out on several months, in teen time, that may as well be decades.

The Fall of the House of Usher Season 1 (October 12)

Mike Flanagan, known for his work on Netflix’s chilling horror series like “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Midnight Mass,” appears poised to adapt Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tale “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Reports suggest that Flanagan’s adaptation will incorporate elements from other Poe stories, indicated by the “Nevermore” tagline and Carla Gugino’s enigmatic transformation into a raven-inspired demon. The series is expected to draw inspiration from the notorious Sackler family, weaving a narrative around the ruthless Roderick Usher, portrayed by Bruce Greenwood. Roderick, the founder of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, must confront his dark history as a mysterious figure begins targeting his heirs, resulting in a Halloween tale centered around the theme of karma.

Pain Hustlers (October 27)

According to TV and movie trends, criticizing the pharmaceutical industry is currently a popular theme. In this Netflix original film, Emily Blunt plays a mother who joins a struggling pharmaceutical startup in Florida, only to become entangled in a criminal conspiracy. The movie boasts star power with Chris Evans as her colleague and Andy Garcia as their unstable boss. Despite the impressive cast, the film has received negative reviews, suggesting that it falls into the category of glossy Netflix movies with A-list actors that ultimately disappoint. Nevertheless, given the lack of other options this month, and the appeal of Blunt and Evans, it might still be worth a watch. -Tim Surette
