Absolutely, you may not believe it now, but by the end of this, you’ll likely be convinced. Shudder’s library can sometimes feel a bit outdated, but this month is a refreshing change. It’s filled with a mix of classic films and possibly some promising new Shudder originals. To name a few, there’s “V/H/S 85,” a fresh take on the series with an 80s twist; “Night of the Hunted,” a story reminiscent of Saw, where a woman must survive a deadly game with a sniper, and “When Evil Lurks,” Shudder’s first original Spanish film.
Additionally, there’s a selection of well-regarded horror films with impressive track records. But enough of the excitement; let’s begin listing them one by one.

Every Movie Coming in October 2023
Evil Dead II
Just to set the standard here, hail to the king. It is one of several masterpieces that Sam Raimi has managed to crank out over his 40-year career directing movies. When people think of Evil Dead as a franchise, Evil Dead II is what they remember here. This is the beginning of Ash becoming a legendary deadite slayer, chopping off his hand, all while delivering cheeky one-liners.
The Saw Anthology
The first seven Saw movies are heading to Shudder, and these are the ones that truly matter. If you haven’t watched any of them yet, it’s a good idea to start before Saw X is released at the end of October. Although your initial impression might be that the Saw films are primarily focused on extreme gore and graphic content, rest assured that the franchise doesn’t solely descend into that.
The franchise kicks off with one of the most compelling and intriguing thriller titles, thanks to the director and writer James Wan, known for The Conjuring. At its core, it poses a straightforward yet thought-provoking question: would you rather take a life or mutilate yourself? The choice is yours. This concept injects a surprising level of realism into a genre often characterized by low-budget movies and straightforward premises during that era.
However, even after the first film, the Saw series has more depth to offer. Saw II is the movie that delves into the character of Jigsaw as a villain. It dedicates significant time to explore his philosophy and the reasons behind his actions, which, once again, elevates these movies beyond mere depictions of people enduring torture. So, before the franchise continues its seemingly endless sequels with no signs of slowing down, it’s worth exploring these early installments.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space
This is an absolute classic film that pretty much lives up to its title. The story revolves around gigantic clowns in comically oversized outfits who come to Earth to cause chaos. They are more into playful mischief than true malice, preferring to goof around while unintentionally harming some people. “Don’t think of it as work” seems to be their motto.
In many ways, it shares similarities with Gremlins, as it’s a creatively executed high-concept film that’s well-crafted above all else. Is it a scary movie? Not really, unless the mere thought of clowns terrifies you, possibly due to watching It. Instead, this movie offers a lot of campy fun, featuring elaborate costumes and plenty of laughs. For those who have experienced Halloween Horror Nights, Killer Klowns from Outer Space even inspired a fantastic haunted house that you might want to check out.
Lords of Salem
If you’re a fan of Rob Zombie, you’ll likely enjoy “Lords of Salem.” Zombie’s filmmaking style can be compared to indulgent junk food – it’s not meant to be thought-provoking or pretentiously artsy, but it does offer entertaining dialogue and memorable characters. In this movie, his wife takes on the lead role as a character named Shocker, who receives a mysterious record from a group called the “Lords” of Salem, leading to revenge unfolding in the town of Massachusetts.
With elements like unreliable narration, satanic rituals, and a strong atmospheric presence, there’s not much more to say about this film other than it’s as distinctive as the rest of Zombie’s filmography.
Hell House LLC
This is a found footage film, so if that’s not your preference, you might want to skip it. However, for those who enjoy this genre, “Hell House LLC” is a standout, following a similar style to “The Blair Witch Project.” The movie unfolds gradually, with increasingly eerie events taking place as the cast prepares a haunted house that turns out to be genuinely haunted. One of its strengths lies in the slow and methodical buildup of unsettling occurrences. What sets it apart is its confidence in the audience, delivering subtle scares without resorting to quick cuts or loud noises. Instead, it opts for a slow tension-building approach, aiming to create a realistic Netflix-style documentary experience.
