Could Shawn Levy, the director of “Deadpool 3,” be a potential candidate? While the release of the Marvel sequel “Avengers: Secret Wars” remains distant on Disney and Marvel Studios’ ever-evolving schedule, there are indications that the companies may already be searching for a director to helm one of the upcoming crossover films within the MCU.

The initial “Deadpool” film, released in 2016, was directed by Tim Miller, followed by the second installment in 2018 under the direction of David Leitch. However, with the character’s integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ryan Reynolds expressed a desire for continuity by having Shawn Levy, a familiar collaborator from “The Adam Project” and “Free Guy,” helm the third film. Levy has a history of working with both Disney and Fox, with projects like “Cheaper by Dozen,” the “Night at the Museum” series, and “Real Steel” among his acclaimed works.

Nonetheless, directing “Deadpool 3” presents a significant challenge for Levy, as it marks the franchise’s first-ever R-rated movie. If all goes well, Levy could have a promising future at Marvel Studios, which has fueled rumors that he is a leading contender to direct “Avengers: Secret Wars.” When asked about these speculations in an interview with ET Canada, the director playfully addressed them with a simple response: “I read that rumor, and that’s all I’m gonna say.”

Recently, several notable directors have been associated with the project. Marvel Studios is said to be considering Sam Raimi, the director of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and highly-regarded Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón for potential involvement in “Avengers: Secret Wars.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been meticulously structured so that every project holds significant relevance, even when considered on an individual basis. This importance has become increasingly apparent in recent years, particularly with the introduction of various Disney+ series.

The Avengers crossover films play a pivotal role within this narrative framework as they assemble a majority of the franchise’s heroes in a grand, shared event. “Avengers: Secret Wars” will follow this tradition and additionally serve as the conclusion to ‘The Multiverse Saga.’ It might even pave the way for a significant reboot of the entire universe, potentially charting a new course for the franchise.

Marvel’s “Secret Wars” is a series of 12 comic books published from 1984 to 1985, credited to Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck, and Bob Layton. The narrative revolves around a formidable being named The Beyonder, who abducts a sizable assembly of heroes and villains from the Marvel Comics universe and compels them to engage in battles on a world called Battleworld.

What’s intriguing is that many of the characters taken by The Beyonder are associated with the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four, and these latter two groups are soon to be introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe through upcoming projects. Consequently, it would make logical sense for Marvel Studios to adapt this particular storyline, albeit with potential modifications, given the impending inclusion of these iconic characters.

“Avengers: Secret Wars” is set for release on May 7, 2027, whereas “Deadpool 3” is slated to premiere in theaters on May 3, 2024.
