On a chilly and solitary day, when you find yourself confined indoors, a heartwarming romantic tale can be just the antidote you crave. Depending on your mood and preference for intricate plots and evolving characters, you might opt for a romantic series to keep you engaged or a simple, standalone romantic movie. While romantic stories with happy endings offer an escape into a dreamy world, those with bittersweet conclusions can hold their own significance. After all, even unrequited love can possess great emotional power.
Netflix offers a diverse selection of romantic films and TV shows, spanning genres from musicals to anthology productions. Some of these were originally created for Netflix, while others were later added to the streaming platform’s library. Even when a film or series eventually departs from Netflix, it can leave a lasting impact, serving as a noteworthy addition to the platform’s array of love stories.
Coming to America (1988)
“Coming to America” is a romantic comedy that begins in the fictional African nation of Zamunda, where Crown Prince Akeem Joffer is apprehensive about an arranged marriage. Seeking genuine love, Akeem and his loyal aide, Semmi, decide to venture to New York, disguising themselves as students, believing Queens would be the ideal place to find a suitable queen. During their time in New York, Akeem falls in love with a woman named Lisa and even takes a job at McDowell’s, a fast-food restaurant owned by her father.
However, when Lisa’s wealthy boyfriend, Darryl, unilaterally announces their engagement, Lisa chooses to date Akeem instead. The situation takes a turn for the worse when the royal family visits New York, and Lisa discovers Akeem’s deception. Despite Akeem’s willingness to renounce his throne for her, Lisa refuses to marry him. Akeem reluctantly returns to Zamunda and agrees to the arranged marriage. Eventually, with the help of the queen’s intervention, the story concludes on a fairy-tale note when it is revealed that Lisa is the one behind the bridal veil.
Love Actually (2003)
“Love Actually” is a romantic comedy that weaves together various love stories set during the Christmas season in London. It explores themes of love, relationships, and connection in a series of interconnected narratives. These include a woman who discovers her marriage is in trouble when she finds an early Christmas gift from her husband’s secretary, a recent widower who becomes entangled in his stepson’s love life with an American classmate, a man secretly in love with a bride-to-be for whom he’s the best man, a mystery writer who overcomes language barriers to find new love, two reserved stand-ins on a movie set who fall in love while performing intimate scenes, an aging rock star’s quest to release a top Christmas song with his manager’s assistance, and even the romantic involvement of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and the President of the United States.
The House Bunny (2008)
The plot of “The House Bunny” centers on Shelley Darlington, a former Playboy Bunny who is deceived by a cunning rival into thinking she’s too old for the Playboy Mansion. Consequently, she is forced to leave and becomes the housemother for a sorority called the Zetas, comprised of socially marginalized members. Her mission is to recruit 30 new members for the sorority to prevent its closure. While guiding the Zetas towards greater social acceptance, Shelley forms a romantic interest in Oliver, a man employed at a retirement facility.
Falling for Christmas (2022)
“Falling for Christmas” tells the story of Sierra Belmont, a wealthy heiress appointed as a “vice president of atmosphere” at her father’s prestigious ski resort. While on a mountaintop photo shoot with her influencer boyfriend, Sierra has an accident, leading to her losing her memory. Jake Russell, who had previously been unsuccessful in pitching his ideas to Sierra’s father, offers her a place to stay at his bed and breakfast. Under the alias “Sarah,” Sierra assists with the hotel and becomes a positive influence while striving to regain her lost memories.
My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
In the movie “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” Julia Roberts plays the character Julianne “Jules” Potter, a New York-based critic. Jules and her best friend, Michael O’Neal, make a pact to marry each other if they’re still single by the age of 28. However, on Jules’ 28th birthday, Michael calls her to announce that he has found the woman he wants to marry, Kimberly Wallace, who is wealthy and young. When Jules meets Kimberly, Kimberly asks Jules to be her maid of honor. Jules agrees but secretly plans to break up the couple and win Michael back.

My Happy Marriage (2023)
“My Happy Marriage” is an anime series adapted from the light novels of the same name, and it unfolds in a world where magic coexists with the Meiji Restoration era. The story initially mirrors the Cinderella tale, focusing on Miyo Saimori, who comes from a loveless arranged marriage. Miyo’s life is marked by servitude under her cruel stepmother and younger half-sister, Kaya. To compound her difficulties, Miyo seems to lack the supernatural powers that her family possesses, further isolating her from the rest of her family.
