The action genre in the 2010s saw significant advancements in technology and changes in generations, which had a positive impact. It tapped into nostalgia by incorporating classic genre elements while also striving for fresh and unique approaches. Esteemed directors like Christopher Nolan, Chad Stahelski, and Christopher McQuarrie reached the pinnacle of their careers by delivering unforgettable action films, demonstrating their expertise in this genre. They seemed entirely at home in their creative zones.

During the 2000s, the action genre had become stagnant, heavily dependent on worn-out clichés and failing to introduce many fresh ideas, except for the thrilling martial arts content emerging from Asia. However, in the 2010s, the genre experienced a resurgence thanks to significant investments, resulting in the creation of some of the most impressive and original blockbuster films in recent history, featuring unforgettable action scenes.

Best Action Movie of Every Year in the 2010s

2010: Inception

Following the massive success of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, audiences eagerly anticipated his next project, which turned out to be the highly imaginative film Inception. This action-packed movie revolves around the concepts of dreams and unfulfilled promises. Leonardo DiCaprio takes on the role of a skilled individual who specializes in entering the minds of his targets. However, in this unique mission, he must do the opposite of his usual work – planting an idea deep within a target’s subconscious, navigating through multiple layers of dreams.

Inception brilliantly explores the boundless possibilities offered by the human subconscious within the action genre. The film takes viewers on a mind-bending journey, featuring gravity-defying fights, entire cities folding in on themselves, and an ending that has sparked endless debates among audiences.

2011: The Raid

The Indonesian film “The Raid” made a significant impact on the action genre and spawned a successful franchise because of its innovative and tension-filled approach. The movie follows an elite S.W.A.T. team as they embark on a near-impossible mission to infiltrate a decrepit apartment building in pursuit of a drug lord. Inside, they confront a multitude of ruthless thugs and highly skilled gangsters.

“The Raid” takes a deceptively straightforward concept and pushes it to extraordinary limits, providing rich character backgrounds and showcasing action sequences with distinctive choreography and exhilarating close-quarters combat scenes.

2012: 21 Jump Street

“21 Jump Street is part of the action-comedy genre, which often features eccentric cop duos, but the unique on-screen rapport between Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum is quite rare. In fact, a significant portion of the film’s humor derives from their character interactions.

The plot revolves around two inept police officers who had contrasting high school experiences – Jenko, the athletic popular kid, and Schmidt, the socially awkward nerd. Over the years, they’ve developed a friendship and a shared objective: to infiltrate a high school undercover and dismantle a dangerous drug operation.”

2013: Why Don’t You Play in Hell?

Sion Sono, known for his intense and dark films like “Suicide Club” and “Noriko’s Dinner Table,” surprises audiences with “Why Don’t You Play in Hell?” This movie combines action and comedy, featuring a crazy film crew that crosses paths with a yakuza gang and seizes the chance to make a blockbuster movie.

After the success of “Love Exposure,” which showcased Sono’s skill in crafting gripping fight sequences, the director goes all-in with “Why Don’t You Play in Hell?” The film offers a wildly unpredictable narrative and an over-the-top storyline, solidifying Sono’s reputation as a master of the genre.

2014: Edge of Tomorrow

The time loop concept, popularized by Groundhog Day, has been a recurring theme in various movie genres, leading to comedies like Palm Springs, sci-fi thrillers like Source Code, and even horror films like Triangle. Creating tension in an action movie centered on time loops might seem challenging at first glance. After all, when the same battles and encounters repeat with identical outcomes, how can you maintain excitement?

In Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise plays a soldier battling an alien invasion, trapped in a never-ending loop of the same day. What initially appears as a curse turns into humanity’s last chance for survival. This film brilliantly showcases how to exploit every aspect of a time loop. It never lets the action pause, using the limited time frame to effectively develop its main characters and intensify the suspense with each subsequent sequence.

2015: Mad Max: Fury Road

Prior to Mad Max: Fury Road, some might argue that the Mad Max series had already explored all facets of its post-apocalyptic world, even venturing into bizarre and fantastical realms in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome. However, no one understands the creative boundaries of a work of art better than its creator, and George Miller took the helm once again to deliver a high-octane action experience that pushed the limits.

The production of Mad Max: Fury Road was a formidable undertaking, involving a large crew in the Namib desert and crafting a two-hour film that essentially feels like one non-stop chase. This continuation of the franchise introduced Tom Hardy as the new Max Rockatansky, a fugitive who unexpectedly forms an alliance while embarking on a perilous escape on wheels.
