In ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,’ nostalgia takes center stage as we reunite with the four mischievous ninja turtles on screen once again, a sight we haven’t seen since 2014. This cinematic reunion is a delightful treat for devoted fans of the comic book series, which has been enchanting audiences since the 1980s, offering a joyful trip down memory lane.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem’ Review

The film cleverly incorporates animated live doodles and scribbles, reminiscent of the drawings we might have created during our school art classes. This artistic choice preserves a sense of authenticity and innocence that is crucial for a project like this. It serves as a sweet reminder of days gone by, a past that we often speak of with nostalgia. However, it’s important to note that the ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem’ doesn’t feel outdated at all. On the contrary, the Ninja Turtles are remarkably in tune with the digital age, displaying a very ‘Gen Z’ savvy attitude.

In the lead-up to the chaos that ensues in the film, we’re taken back to the origin story of four small turtles who undergo a transformative experience after encountering radioactive ooze. These ordinary turtles are irrevocably altered and eventually adopted by a wise rat named Splinter, whose voice is brought to life by the talented Jackie Chan. Under Splinter’s tutelage, the turtles receive a comprehensive education in the ways of the ninja. The intriguing parallels between their journey and that of traditional martial arts stories can’t be ignored.

Returning to the present, in Mutant Mayhem, we find the teenage mutant turtles—Raphael (played by Brady Noon), the laid-back Michelangelo (Shamon Brown Jr.), the tech-savvy Donatello (Micah Abbey), and their steadfast leader Leonardo (Nicolas Cantu). Despite their extraordinary abilities, they harbor a deep longing for a normal life where they can peacefully coexist with humans.

Their quest for normalcy leads them to befriend a human companion, April, who also happens to be a student journalist portrayed by Ayo Edebiri. Together, they embark on a journey to confront the looming threat that hangs over New York, represented by another mutant creature, Superfly, voiced by none other than Ice Cube. The adorable quartet of turtles and their newfound human ally, April, unite to save the city and aspire to become accepted as heroes, even if their actions inadvertently cause some chaos along the way.

What sets Mutant Mayhem apart is its abundant infusion of pop culture references. It doesn’t shy away from poking fun at itself and maintains a lighthearted and humorous tone throughout. The teenage turtles are thoroughly ‘in-the-know,’ discussing everything from sneaking off to an Adele concert to catching the latest blockbuster, ‘Avengers Endgame.’ Anime enthusiasts will also find their interests catered to, and Beyoncé fans will have their moment with some catchy tunes.

A noteworthy nod goes to a reference to BTS’ “Butter,” which is executed with seamless finesse. It’s evident that these turtles, despite their subterranean dwelling, have managed to keep up with the times, as even the Wi-Fi signal reaches their sewer lair.

The movie’s standout feature is its remarkable cast, including Paul Rudd, Rose Byrne, Seth Rogen, John Cena, Hannibal Buress, and Post Malone, who breathe life into the mutant characters with humor and charm. Jackie Chan shines as RatMan. The music enhances the animated experience, focusing on the turtles’ camaraderie. The film offers laughs but occasionally overuses trendy lingo, attempting to find the balance between being cool and going too far, especially in the Millennial-Gen Z crossover.

In essence, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem seamlessly blends nostalgia, humor, and a deep appreciation for contemporary culture, creating an entertaining experience that bridges generations and appeals to audiences of all ages.
