The movie Meg 2 is out in theatre from August 04, 2023. “Meg 2: The Trench” attempts to build on the campy charm of its predecessor, “Meg” (2018), drawing inspiration from cult classics like “Jaws” and “Jurassic Park.” However, the change in directors, with Ben Wheatly taking over from Jon Turteltaub, fails to fully exploit the potential of a bigger canvas and meaner threat. The film falls into the trap of becoming a generic creature feature with a predictable premise and clichéd characters.
The movie kicks off with a showdown between monstrous creatures, including a hybrid of a lizard and a crocodile, a T-Rex, and the iconic megalodon. Eco-warrior Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) leads the charge against a group of miscreants dumping toxic waste into the ocean, setting the tone for what lies ahead.
However, excitement brews when billionaire Jiuming (Wu Jing), the owner of an oceanographic institute, reveals a bond with a captive megalodon. As the crew embarks on an exploratory mission, they encounter bioluminescent flora and mysterious fauna. The tension escalates when their mission faces sabotage, leading to thrilling sequences as they fight for survival and attempt a rescue mission in high-tech suits. But unfortunately, the narrative begins to sink, much like their beleaguered vessel.

The plot becomes convoluted as the group contends with terrorist-like villains, lizard crocodiles, multiple megalodons, and a colossal octopus. Cheesy humor from crew members DJ (Page Kennedy), Jiuming, and James Mac’ Mackreides (Cliff Curtis) further distracts from the story. A detour to Fun Island, where beach bums need saving, only adds unnecessary length to the film without significant contribution to the plot.
While the performances, including Jason Statham’s, are adequate, they fail to stand out. Statham’s scenes with Jiuming’s niece, Shuya Sophia Cai, offer fleeting moments of warmth but lack consistent emotional depth.
The visual effects of the megalodons swimming across the ocean sometimes feel gimmicky, but the main fight scenes are commendably executed. “Meg 2: The Trench” falls short of becoming a monster masterpiece and only manages to provide passable entertainment for those seeking cheesy fun.
