In 2015, Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario surprised audiences and later led to the creation of a film series. The original movie features an FBI agent, played by Emily Blunt, who joins a government task force to combat the escalating drug war along the U.S.-Mexico border. The 2018 sequel, Sicario: Day of the Soldado, continues the border drug war storyline, where federal agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) partners with the enigmatic Alejandro (Benicio del Toro) to tackle cartels trafficking terrorists into the U.S. Will they return for the third installment?

The first film received positive reviews and performed well at the box office, earning three Academy Award nominations. While the second installment was less favored by critics, it still had commercial success. The third movie, known as Sicario: Capos, is in the works to complete the anthology trilogy. There has been speculation about the returning cast and crew for the third film.

Update as of November 4, 2023: This article has been revised to include recent developments regarding Sicario 3, including the appointment of a new screenwriter, Christopher McQuarrie.

Sicario 3: The Plot

Producer Trent Luckinbill has confirmed the development of a third Sicario movie, following the release of Day of the Soldado. Although the specific details of the storyline are still unconfirmed, it is expected to continue from the ending of Sicario 2. In that ending, Alejandro, played by Benicio del Toro, survives a gunshot from a young gang member named Miguel, portrayed by Elijah Rodriguez. The final scene takes place a year later, where the now-recovered Alejandro appears to recruit Miguel, hinting at a potential mentorship in the next film.

Additionally, a sequel would need to address the career implications faced by Matt, portrayed by Josh Brolin, as his rare emotional outburst led him to defy the strict orders of his superiors in Sicario 2. The possible title for the third installment, “Sicario: Capos,” suggests that Matt and Alejandro may confront the most formidable drug kingpins they’ve encountered to date.

Sicario 3: The Cast

As of now, the casting for Sicario 3 has not been officially announced, but producer Molly Smith has indicated their intention to have Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, and Jeffrey Donovan return for the third installment. Many fans believe that Emily Blunt’s character is essential for concluding the trilogy, as they want to explore her character’s development after the traumatic events of the first film. Although Sicario: Day of the Soldado received some positive feedback, it was notably missing Blunt’s presence and was generally considered less engaging than the original. There are reports suggesting that the series’ producers are keen on bringing Blunt back, but her busy schedule could pose a challenge.

Despite the knowledge that a script is completed, there is still no official confirmation regarding the cast members who will appear in the film. Additionally, if they aim to bring back Isabela Merced, who portrayed Isabel Reyes in Sicario: Day of the Soldado, they will need to work around her schedule, as she has been quite busy with upcoming projects, including Sony’s Madame Web, Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus, and the role of Hawkgirl in Superman: Legacy.

Recent Updates on the Status of Sicario 3

Josh Brolin had expressed doubts about the future of the project, citing financial and production challenges. He mentioned that filmmakers like Paul Thomas Anderson faced difficulties making films in the $20 to $45 million range, similar to movies like “No Country for Old Men,” “True Grit,” and “Sicario.” Despite the demand for a “Sicario 3,” it seemed challenging to get it off the ground.

However, there’s now a positive update from producers Erica Lee and Basil Iwanyk, who confirmed that Sicario 3 is still in development and was scheduled to begin production after the writers’ strikes concluded. With the strikes now over, original Sicario writer Taylor Sheridan and Christopher McQuarrie have been finalizing the script. While both are capable of directing and writing, it’s unclear who will be the director.

Though fans may hope for Denis Villeneuve’s return, it’s unlikely due to his commitments to the Dune franchise. He expressed interest in returning but is tied up with other projects, making his return for Sicario 3 uncertain.

Release Date

“Sicario: Capos is being produced by Black Label Media, and although the production start date hasn’t been officially announced, it can be inferred that Sicario 3 could commence filming sometime in 2024, considering the script is in its final stages of development. As a result, it’s conceivable that we might not witness the completed movie until late 2025 at the earliest. Given the mixed reception of the second installment, the studio might be exercising extra care in putting together the next sequel.”
