The upcoming Salem’s Lot movie, originally scheduled for a theatrical release in 2024, is now facing the possibility of skipping theaters and premiering directly on the streaming service Max. This decision is influenced by the ongoing crisis in Hollywood, causing delays in film and series production and making it challenging to meet release dates, especially if the actors’ strike continues. Despite Max’s plans to deliver significant releases like the second season of House of the Dragon, many other titles are at risk.
In response to this situation, Warner Bros. Discovery is considering moving some of its planned theatrical releases directly to Max. This move is aimed at bolstering the streaming platform’s content library and providing more options for viewers. Although Salem’s Lot is a candidate for this change, it’s important to note that no final decision has been made regarding the film’s distribution strategy.
Warner Bros. Discovery has a track record of successful adaptations of Stephen King’s works, such as the It movies directed by Andy Muschietti, which performed exceptionally well at the box office. These successes have even led to collaborations between the director and the DC Extended Universe, where he is set to direct The Flash and work on a new Batman film called The Brave and the Bold.

What to Expect from the Salem’s Lot Movie
Gary Dauberman, known for his contributions to The Conjuring universe and as the screenwriter for the two It films, wrote and directed this movie, which is based on Stephen King’s second novel published in 1975 after the immense success of his debut book, Carrie.
The plot follows Ben Mears, an established writer grappling with writer’s block, who returns to his hometown in search of inspiration. Salem’s Lot appears to be the quintessential small American town where everyone knows each other, and nothing unusual ever occurs. However, it may not be as peaceful as it seems. Years ago, Ben entered the Marsten mansion as part of a bet with friends, and what he witnessed there continues to haunt him.

Ben’s return to the town piques his curiosity, leading him to uncover a truth far more horrifying and bizarre than he could have ever imagined. Salem’s Lot is not an ordinary town; it harbors creatures that have silently ruled it for years.
This is not the first time Salem’s Lot has been adapted for the screen. In 1979, the story was turned into a two-part limited series for CBS. In 1987, the film A Return to Salem’s Lot was released, ostensibly serving as a sequel to the earlier series, although none of the original cast returned. In 2004, TNT aired another series based on Salem’s Lot, and the show Castle Rock makes references to Salem’s Lot as it is part of the larger universe of King’s novels.
