Ferrari, the upcoming biographical film chronicling the life of Enzo Ferrari, initially faced challenges during its production and distribution phases. However, it is now slated for release later this year and boasts a star-studded cast featuring actors like Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz. The film has also enlisted the talents of Oscar-winning cinematographer Erik Messerschmidt and will be helmed by the experienced director Michael Mann. Notably, Mann has been working on bringing this project to fruition since 2000, making it a long-anticipated endeavor.
The movie is expected to be a thrilling portrayal of Enzo Ferrari’s life, given his status as a renowned race car entrepreneur. Amidst his involvement in Formula 1 races, his industrial achievements, and the creation of an iconic brand in the world of fashion and speed, the biopic will focus on a specific period in Enzo Ferrari’s life. It will draw inspiration from the book “Enzo Ferrari – The Man and the Machine” by Brock Yates. Here’s an overview of what we currently know about the highly-anticipated Ferrari movie.
Ferrari: Plot, Cast, Release Date and Everything Else We Know
The Plot
The upcoming film focuses on a specific period in Enzo Ferrari’s life, weaving together deep emotions and the excitement of racing, making it a surefire hit for racing enthusiasts. The movie’s logline highlights its primary focus: portraying the experiences of Italian driver and entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari in 1957. During this time, he grappled with family issues while also preparing for the 1957 Mille Miglia.
For racing enthusiasts, the significance of the 1957 Mille Miglia is well-known. This thousand-mile race featured high-speed cars racing on open roads through the picturesque Italian countryside. However, the Mille Miglia’s history took a tragic turn during its final race. A Ferrari car experienced a catastrophic tire blowout, causing it to crash into the crowd, resulting in the driver’s death and the tragic loss of nine lives, mostly children. Enzo Ferrari was subsequently held accountable and faced manslaughter charges, sparking a protracted and intense legal battle that cast a shadow over Ferrari for years.
This biopic is profoundly dramatic because, in addition to the pressures of building a world-class racing team, Enzo Ferrari was contending with significant family hardships during this period. The film delves into the death of his eldest son, who succumbed to muscular dystrophy in 1956, and explores his relationship with his illegitimate son from his earlier affair with Lina Lardi.
Although divorce was illegal in Italy at the time, these events undoubtedly strained his marriage with Laura Dominica Garello. Enzo Ferrari’s life may seem to outsiders as one filled with the luxuries of a wealthy man in the elite world of racing, but upon closer examination, it is marred by the constant presence of death and familial challenges.
Neon has released a teaser trailer for the biopic, which captures the film’s high-octane, emotionally charged essence. Dominated by the thundering roar of Ferrari engines and minimal dialogue, the trailer offers viewers a tantalizing glimpse of what lies ahead, including glimpses of the film’s stars. As the trailer concludes, Enzo Ferrari’s voice declares, “If you get into one of my cars, you get in to win,” leaving viewers eagerly anticipating the film’s release.

The Cast
Ferrari’s upcoming biopic will feature Adam Driver in the lead role, known for his portrayal of Kylo Ren in Star Wars and Maurizio Gucci in House of Gucci. In discussing the film at the Venice Film Festival, Driver mentioned that it has a strong focus on the theme of grief.
Penélope Cruz, a well-established actress primarily recognized for her role in Vanilla Sky, will portray Laura Ferrari, Enzo Ferrari’s wife. Shailene Woodley, known for her roles in The Fault in Our Stars and Big Little Lies, is cast as Lina Lardi, Ferrari’s mistress. Gabriel Leone, known for his work in Dark Days and Dom, will play Alfonso De Portago, the Ferrari driver involved in the tragic Mille Miglia crash. Patrick Dempsey, famous for Can’t Buy Me Love and Grey’s Anatomy, will take on the role of Piero Taruffi, the victorious driver of the race.
The film also boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Jack O’Connell as Peter Collins, Sarah Gadon as Linda Christian, Valentina Belle as Cecilia Manzini, Tommaso Basili as Gianni Agnelli, Erik Haugen as Edmund Nelson, Lino Musella as Sergio Scaglietti, Brett Smrz as Olivier Gendebien, Andrea Dolente as Gino Rancati, and Samuel Hubinette as Mike Hawthorn.
Release Date
Ferrari had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2023, receiving a positive reception. It’s also set to close the New York Film Festival, taking place from September 29 to October 15. This highly anticipated biopic will be exclusively released in theaters on December 25, 2023, aiming for a strong holiday season performance and potential awards recognition.
Interestingly, it’s worth noting the timing of Ferrari’s release, as it coincides with the release of “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” This creates a humorous connection because both Aquaman and Enzo Ferrari were subjects of parody movies in the popular HBO series “Entourage,” where the main character, Vincent Chase, portrayed both of them. It’s a quirky case of life imitating art in unexpected ways.
