After the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, fans eagerly awaited how director Ryan Coogler would navigate the Black Panther narrative. The release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in November 2022 exceeded expectations, offering an emotional and transformative journey within Wakanda. Significant changes unfolded in the world’s most advanced nation, introducing not only a new Black Panther but also a new ruler.

The unexpected twist occurred when M’Baku (Winston Duke) emerged from a Wakandan aircraft to vie for the throne instead of Shuri. Despite initial confusion, the leaders of Wakanda welcomed M’Baku’s candidacy. Although many anticipated Shuri (Letitia Wright) to succeed her mother and brother, M’Baku’s ascension raised questions.

Update as of November 28, 2023: More than a year has passed since the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, prompting additional insights into Shuri, M’Baku, and the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Traditions of Wakanda

In the Wakandan tradition, the Black Panther has always been the protector of the nation, irrespective of the reigning king. T’Challa assumed the role from his father, T’Chaka, in Captain America: Civil War. Although Wakanda Forever doesn’t explicitly confirm M’Baku as the new king, it suggests that he might have taken the throne while Shuri, T’Challa’s sister, focuses on her role as Wakanda’s greatest hero and her scientific pursuits. Shuri, who was in Haiti during the events, likely gave her blessing for M’Baku to become the new king, as she may not have aspired to lead the nation. M’Baku’s statement upon challenging for the throne implies Shuri’s support, as he mentions that the Black Panther, referring to Shuri, won’t be joining them.

The elders at the ceremony appeared content with M’Baku’s presence, signaling their acceptance of him potentially succeeding Shuri. Moreover, considering the requirement for challengers to be of noble birth, it seemed unlikely for anyone else to pose a credible threat to M’Baku. Therefore, he likely ascended to the throne of Wakanda without facing any opposition. Winston Duke further validated this in a video interview with Esquire, confirming M’Baku’s status as the new King of Wakanda.

How Has M’Baku Changed?

Initially portrayed as an antagonist with conflicting views on Wakandan customs, M’Baku underwent significant character development in “Wakanda Forever.” While he had previously opposed Shuri’s technological advancements and advocated a preemptive strike against the Talokan kingdom, M’Baku emerged as a voice of reason during the elders’ discussions. Despite his earlier stance, he recognized the Talokan people’s loyalty to Namor and argued against war. In a surprising turn, M’Baku assumed a supportive, big brother role towards Shuri, encouraging her to move beyond revenge.

Contrary to his past opposition, M’Baku demonstrated a commitment to his people and country, setting aside personal feelings to aid T’Challa in reclaiming the throne from Killmonger. While currently serving as a steward, it was revealed that T’Challa had a son, Toussaint, who might eventually inherit the throne. M’Baku could be a temporary placeholder until the young prince comes of age. Toussaint presently resides in Haiti with Nakia, as T’Challa and Nakia believed it was best for him to experience a more ordinary life away from Wakandan royalty. The future may witness the royal family’s return to reclaim their ancestral seat when the time is right.

Why Did Shuri Abdicate the Throne?

It seems like you’re discussing a specific storyline or interpretation related to Shuri’s character development in “Wakanda Forever.” While I don’t have real-time updates or information beyond my last training cut-off in January 2022, I can offer some general insights based on existing knowledge.

Shuri is a complex character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), known for her intelligence, technological prowess, and wit. If there are recent developments in the MCU or new narratives introduced after my last update, I won’t be aware of them.

Shuri choosing not to take the throne immediately could be influenced by various factors. In many superhero narratives, characters undergo personal growth and self-discovery before fully embracing leadership roles. It’s also possible that the storytellers wanted to explore different aspects of Shuri’s character and her journey towards becoming a leader.

It’s essential to note that character arcs in superhero stories often involve challenges, setbacks, and moments of self-realization. If Shuri faced internal conflicts or uncertainties about her readiness to rule, this could contribute to her decision to let someone else take the throne temporarily.

If you have more specific questions or if there are updates beyond my last knowledge cut-off, feel free to provide additional details, and I’ll do my best to assist!

What Could Happen in a Potential Black Panther 3?

While a third Black Panther film has not been officially confirmed, the chances of Marvel producing one seem high given the success of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever at the box office and the franchise’s popularity within the MCU. Letitia Wright, the new Black Panther, has expressed her desire for a Black Panther 3. The MCU has a history of creating trilogies, such as Iron Man, Captain America, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

If Black Panther 3 becomes a reality, fans can expect to see Shuri and M’Baku collaborating once again. M’Baku would lead Wakanda efficiently, and Shuri, as the Black Panther, might partner with Ironheart or other Avengers and Guardians. Together, they would defend Wakanda from new threats with the support of their fellow Wakandans. There’s also the potential for Shuri and Nakia to involve Prince T’Challa in Wakanda to explore his heritage.

The geopolitical conflict hinted at in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever involving Vibranium could set the stage for future MCU stories like Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts. As global tensions rise, Wakanda and its leaders may play a crucial role in these conflicts.

Wakanda Forever portrayed Shuri as a flawed character compared to her brother, T’Challa. However, this sets the stage for Shuri’s character development, and she will likely face more challenges and moral dilemmas in the future. Throughout her journey, M’Baku will be there to support her and oversee Wakanda in her absence.
