Netflix continually releases a wide range of content, encompassing both original productions and classic titles in both the film and TV categories. Netflix employs effective algorithms to analyze each subscriber’s viewing habits and offer recommendations for their enjoyment. However, these suggestions are not always a perfect match, and occasionally, it’s the entirely unexpected and seemingly random choices that truly pique one’s interest.

Within the vast Netflix library, there exist numerous hidden treasures, including TV series and movies that, despite their quality, may not have received the attention they deserve. This compilation presents some of the finest hidden gems available on Netflix, encompassing films suitable for a single evening’s viewing and TV shows perfect for a weekend binge-watch, or even a more extended viewing experience over several weeks.

10 Best Hidden Gems on Netflix

Echoes (2022)

Echoes, a miniseries originally intended for just one season, had a single seven-episode run that didn’t garner as much attention as expected, despite having notable actors like Michelle Monaghan and Matt Bomer. This mystery thriller revolves around the story of twins Leni and Gina, both portrayed by Monaghan, who have been swapping identities since their teenage years. They annually meet on their birthday to update each other on their lives and then switch, all while keeping this secret from their coworkers, friends, and family.

However, the mystery deepens when Leni suddenly disappears, and with every episode, viewers are left questioning the true nature of their identities and what happened to these women. While Echoes received mixed reviews, the ultimate resolution may not fully satisfy viewers, but the journey to reach that conclusion is undeniably entertaining.

White Gold (2017-2019)

Amid the popularity of money-centric shows like Mad Men, Suits, Billions, and Succession, the clever British sitcom White Gold often went unnoticed. However, this ’80s-themed series is a delightful watch. Viewers cringe at the main character, Vincent, played by Ed Westwick, who is a pompous and arrogant double-glazed windows salesman. He resorts to lying, cheating, and swindling clients to fill his own pockets and support his extravagant lifestyle.

Joe Thomas and James Buckley, best known for their roles in Inbetweeners, play Vincent’s coworkers and friends. While White Gold initially aired on BBC Two, it faced a delay before its second season and unfortunately never returned for a third.

Okja (2017)

If you’re in search of a great film, “Okja,” directed by Bong Joon-ho (famous for his Academy Award-winning “Parasite”), marks a departure from his typical dark comedy style. This science-fiction action-adventure flick tells the story of a young girl who is separated from the genetically engineered “super pig” she had raised for years.

The super pig, Okja, is being transported to the United States for use as food. On a more profound level, “Okja” provides commentary on the controversies within the meat industry and capitalism at large. Nevertheless, the movie is heartwarming, intellectually engaging, and exceptionally imaginative.

One Day at a Time (2017-2020)

One Day at a Time was a beloved 1970s sitcom, but what many might not know is that it received a modern reimagining in the 2010s. This version of the show revolved around Penelope, a Latina single mother and Army veteran, as she raised her two kids in a modest apartment with the support of her lively mother, Lydia. Their lives frequently intersected with their young and affluent landlord, who was a bit of a playboy and somewhat lonely.

Similar to the finest sitcoms, One Day at a Time tackled a range of serious and relevant topics, including issues such as teenage sexuality, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), alcoholism, mental health, and racism. Despite its cancellation, the show was brought back for a fourth season by Pop, thanks to its dedicated fanbase. The first three seasons can still be streamed on Netflix, and they offer a great mix of humor and heartfelt moments that make them well worth watching.

Bodyguard (2018-)

Richard Madden is widely recognized for his role as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones and, more recently, for his appearance in the spy action series Citadel alongside Priyanka Chopra. However, during the gap between these two projects, he played the lead in an intense British political thriller named Bodyguard. In this series, Madden portrays David Budd, a British Army veteran dealing with PTSD, who is tasked with providing security for the Home Secretary. Despite their differing political views, he is deeply committed to his job and is willing to risk his life to ensure her safety.

As David becomes entangled in a complex conspiracy, he finds himself grappling with far more than just his personal beliefs and inner demons. Those who enjoyed watching The Night Agent will likely notice the parallels between these two shows. A second season of Bodyguard is reportedly in development.

Beckham (2023)

Even people who aren’t interested in soccer, especially English football, are familiar with the name David Beckham. This individual, who initially started his career with Manchester United, gained widespread recognition for his accomplishments as a model, a highly skilled athlete, and a handsome young man married to a member of the Spice Girls. “Beckham,” a documentary directed by Fisher Stevens of “Succession” fame, offers fans an engaging journey through his life and professional trajectory, providing a truly refreshing viewing experience.

In the documentary, viewers witness Beckham candidly addressing his wife Victoria (known as “Posh” Spice) for her privilege, observe his interactions with their children, and hear the distressing story of how he was unfairly demonized not only by the British media but also by the public. Many might argue that “Beckham” is one of the finest docuseries available on streaming platforms.

Queen of the South (2016-2021)

Picture a fusion of elements from popular TV shows like Weeds, Breaking Bad, Narcos, and Ozark, but this time with a strong female lead. “Queen of the South,” adapted from the telenovela “La Reina del Sur,” follows Teresa (portrayed by Alice Braga) on her journey from a humble resident of Sinaloa, Mexico, to becoming the formidable leader of a sprawling drug empire.

With five seasons already under its belt, this crime drama is well worth your time. While the premise may seem familiar, it offers a fresh and thrilling take on a story that has been told repeatedly in the past.

The Fundamentals of Caring (2016)

Indeed, Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez starred together in a delightful road comedy-drama that remains relatively underrated. In the film “The Fundamentals of Caring,” Rudd portrays Ben, a man who enrolls in a caregiving course as a way to avoid being served divorce papers by his wife. In the course, he forms a bond with Trevor, an 18-year-old with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy who is resentful of his circumstances and frustrated with his inability to lead the life he desires.

As their friendship deepens, Ben embarks on a mission to show Trevor the true meaning of living, leading them on an unforgettable road trip. During their journey, they cross paths with Dot, a hitchhiker portrayed by Selena Gomez. “The Fundamentals of Caring” is a mix of road trip adventures and a coming-of-age tale, with critics commending the on-screen chemistry between the lead actors.

Imposters (2017-2018)

“Imposters” is an underappreciated TV series that may not have garnered widespread attention, but those who have had the pleasure of watching it have fallen in love with its dark comedic charm. The show revolves around Maddie, a cunning con artist portrayed by Inbar Lavi, who specializes in manipulating men into falling in love with her, marrying them, robbing them blind, and leaving behind a farewell message. However, when Ezra, a heartbroken victim played by Rob Heaps, becomes her latest mark, he becomes determined to track her down at all costs.

During his pursuit, he crosses paths with two other victims, Richard (Parker Young) and Jules (Marianne Rendon). Together, this unlikely trio embarks on a journey that reveals deeper and more sinister secrets about Maddie. Nevertheless, it’s evident that Maddie still maintains a hold over each of them, sparking desires for more than mere retribution.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015-2019)

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend was a series that brilliantly combined musical numbers, self-deprecating humor, and irreverent wit. It garnered acclaim during its run, including prestigious awards like a Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critics Choice Award. However, after concluding, the show seemed to fade into obscurity. In line with its title, the plot follows Rebecca, portrayed by creator Rachel Bloom, as she makes the impulsive decision to relocate to West Covina in pursuit of her high school sweetheart, firmly believing they were destined to be together.

While the early seasons of the show predominantly focus on humor, the final season takes a more somber turn, delving into themes of mental health and the quest for personal happiness. This shift towards a deeper exploration of these topics was a fitting way to conclude the series, but the uproarious and tuneful journey leading up to this meaningful lesson had fans in stitches and singing along.
