The whole film is about 8 minutes and less. But it conveyed what it should want to. The main aspect of this film is, everything is real. I can also feel the live thumb snapping sound at the background score. The film is more lively and realistic. The main advantage of this film is that no dialogue, but the title was justified. This film need no subtitle at the same time, anyone can watch this film even deaf and numb. It is full of visuals and full of realistic. Thus it can create an impact on the audience.
The first thing to be noticed in this film is that the protagonist, not a human. Hope Malayalam Short Film starts with a visual of a boy who is searching for something in mud and dirt. There he found a worm. The element worm is a real live worm. The majority of people couldn’t see a worm that easily. The visual of the worm and its move will make a viewer relaxed. After that, the boy hooked the worm in a small hook. I don’t say it is wrong, but at the same time, we should be careful at this kind of scene. Though it is a worm, it was hooked alive and it felt awkward and pitiful. May it may vary from audience to audience.
The bamboo fishing stick is quite an interesting element in this film as it was self-made. So there will be always a separate attraction to self-made things. In one frame a lizard and its prey, in another frame the boy and the fishing stick. The lizard catches its prey. The boy caught his fish. It makes sense. The switching between frames is good and attractive.
Once he got his fish, he closes that fish with a bucket. Then he was running somewhere, brought an empty bucket, dipped and took some water in the bucket, and put the fish in. The fish started moving. Till this scene, the team used a real live fish. There comes the plot of the story. As I said using live elements like cat, fish, and worm, always makes the team and the film come better. The team used sounds of thunder sound effects a bit high. Though it felt realistic, it was a bit high.
The most important thing is the team even used two cats to act real and shot. The cats were trying to catch the fish. Then another cat comes there and it is also helping the cat. The most important element to be appreciated is the plate which the boy used to close the fish bucket. It was some plate which kept for cleaning after eating. The rice was still there on the plate made extra points to get attracted.
The team waited and shot the whole scene to make this shot more realistic. If we put our effort it will sure reap goodness. It looked like the team also waited for rain or they might have shot it already and placed it over here during editing. After the bucket was full during the rain, the fish jumped out and went into the river again. Again everything is real and nothing fake. If you ask me, this film is just a kind of effort and coincidence. The team got perfect elements to explain the topic at the same time they made it short and sweet to convey the core of this film.
No dialogues made this film a universal film. The protagonist is not a human, so most people would love to watch this film. The topic is so simple and they will easily understand the core. The subject is familiar and people can relate it to their life. The film is not a love story, so people won’t feel cliché and at the same time, they will it motivate the people.
The story, screenplay, music, and cinematography complimented each other very well. That is why this film succeeded in conveying what it wanted to. I will surely recommend this film to my friends if they ask me to suggest some motivational short films. If you ask me to give a rating,
- For story and screenplay – I would give 6/10
- For direction – I would give 9/10
- For creativity – I would give 9/10
- For cinematography – I would give 8/10
