Following the conclusion of the writers’ strike, streaming platforms like Netflix are now shifting their focus towards prioritizing projects that were already in progress during the strike, particularly high-profile ones like “Wednesday” and “Stranger Things.” Networks and streaming services are also emphasizing their long-running series and big-budget shows, such as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “9-1-1: Lone Star.”

Once the actors’ strike comes to an end, there is expected to be a rush in producing movies and TV shows, leading to a compressed schedule for both writing and shooting. Netflix and other studios are eager to kickstart production as soon as the SAG-AFTRA strike is resolved.

According to Elsa Ramo, the managing partner at Ramo Law who represented companies like Imagine Entertainment and Skydance, the main priority is to resume projects that were well underway before the strike disrupted them. This includes movies like the Gladiator sequel, which had already completed more than half of its planned filming, and Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two, which still had some scenes left to shoot when the strike began. Other films in focus include “Beetlejuice 2,” Clint Eastwood’s “Juror No. 2,” “Deadpool 3,” and “Twisters,” a sequel to the 1996 tornado action thriller.

Ramo explains that after the strikes are resolved, there will be high demand for a limited pool of directors and stars, creating a supply-and-demand challenge. Additionally, the shooting schedule, which was previously staggered, will now see a surge in simultaneous production of numerous movies and shows.

In the realm of television, many networks and streaming services are focusing on their ongoing long-standing series and high-budget shows that were already in production. This approach makes sense because established series don’t require the setup of new creative teams or casting processes. Notably, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” and Fox’s “9-1-1: Lone Star” are among the top priorities for broadcast networks.

However, even with pre-existing plans, it’s expected that writers and actors will face a challenging transition when they return to work. J.D. Connor, an associate professor of cinema and media studies at USC, anticipates a “challenging few months” for them. According to Connor, networks will likely aim to expedite their production timelines, potentially experimenting with tighter schedules that blend writing and shooting even more closely than the current timeframes.

Regarding Netflix, their priorities include developing scripts and shooting for the second season of “Wednesday,” a series executive produced by Tim Burton and centered around Jenna Ortega’s portrayal of Wednesday Addams. Additionally, they are giving high importance to the fifth and final season of “Stranger Things,” featuring a young cast that needs to maintain their believability as teenagers.

In conclusion, industry insiders are cautiously optimistic, hoping for increased opportunities and deals in the near future. However, they are also realistic, understanding that a surge in incoming offers may not be guaranteed.

Presently, viewers can watch the first season of “Wednesday” and all four seasons of “Stranger Things” on Netflix.
