The movie The Equalizer 3 is set in Italian background, Robert McCall, portrayed by the ever-enigmatic Denzel Washington, indulges in a quintessential Italian pastime – people-watching from a cozy café. While McCall’s preference might be tea, he graciously accepts the coffee offered by a lovely server, who serves it with a warm smile.
It’s a common occurrence for people to smile at McCall, and one can’t help but wonder why. Perhaps it’s his striking appearance, his serene demeanor, or the subtle aura of restrained intensity that surrounds him, as if he’s holding back an immense, potentially formidable power. Or maybe, like the rest of us, they’re silently urging McCall to get on with whatever he has in mind, as if they sense he’s about to set the town ablaze.
“The Equalizer 3” marks the third and reportedly final installment of the series featuring Denzel Washington as the enigmatic avenger, McCall. Perhaps he’s grown weary of the franchise’s recurring ultraviolence, or maybe he’s simply tired of the predictable nature of it all, even if this installment remains as consistently watchable yet morally complicated as its predecessors. Regardless, little has changed since the first “Equalizer” film in 2014. McCall remains the enigmatic figure in all black who, when confronted with brutal adversity, unleashes extraordinary combat skills, near-superhuman strength, and a remarkable ability to anticipate the movement of bodies in space.

Unsurprisingly, Denzel Washington remains the primary draw in “Equalizer 3.” The film essentially serves as a showcase for his talents as he smolders, exudes charisma, and dominates the screen while exploring a quaint, breathtaking town on the Amalfi coast. Nestled beneath a mountain and overlooking the sea, this town miraculously seems untouched by the swarm of tourists, which is one of the story’s more implausible elements. McCall arrives here shortly after a dynamic opening sequence in Sicily, setting a dark and brooding tone that emphasizes one key lesson: villains should never be too careless with their corkscrews. In McCall’s hands, it won’t be used to open a bottle of Nero d’Avola.
In essence, “The Equalizer 3” continues the tradition of delivering thrilling action sequences and showcasing Denzel Washington’s magnetic presence. While the plot may tread familiar ground, the film’s picturesque Italian backdrop adds an appealing layer of allure to the proceedings. As we follow McCall on his journey through this stunning coastal town, we’re reminded once again of Washington’s undeniable star power and the enduring appeal of the “Equalizer” franchise.
Director Fuqua, known for his consistently dynamic and sometimes restless filmmaking style, has opted for a more subdued visual approach in this instance. Instead of his customary flair, he primarily alternates between sweeping aerial shots and close-ups of the talented cast, which includes Dakota Fanning and Remo Girone, as they perform their roles. Some of these high-angle perspectives might be influenced by the town’s confined layout, although Fuqua may simply enjoy experimenting with drones. He also incorporates a few nods to cinema history, such as McCall’s freshly shaved head, reminiscent of “Apocalypse Now.”
Through his lens, in the movie The Equalizer 3, he presents a portrayal of contemporary Italy, complete with scenes of elderly fishermen, that feels as carefully curated as anything filmed on an old Hollywood backlot.
