Since Disney’s acquisition of Star Wars in 2012, the franchise has seen substantial growth, including a sequel trilogy, spin-off films, and animated projects. While 2019 marked the conclusion of The Skywalker Saga, Star Wars has thrived on Disney+ in the realm of streaming.

Series like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, The Bad Batch, Tales of the Jedi, Andor, Ahsoka, and Star Wars: Visions have explored different facets of the Star Wars universe, both within and beyond established timelines. Disney’s commitment to expanding Star Wars content is evident, with numerous series in the pipeline.

Upcoming Star Wars TV Series and When They’ll Release On Disney+

Skeleton Crew

Following his departure from directing Fantastic Four, Jon Watts, known for his MCU Spider-Man trilogy, is helming a Star Wars series on Disney+ titled “Skeleton Crew.” Set after Return of the Jedi, the show focuses on children adrift in the galaxy following the formation of The New Republic. Produced by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, it likely ties into their interconnected Star Wars universe. While originally slated for a late 2023 release, no trailers or official details have emerged. Given production delays, a 2024 premiere seems possible.

The Bad Batch Season 3

In 2021, Disney launched “Star Wars: The Bad Batch” on May the Fourth, one of three Star Wars series for Disney+ that year, alongside “Star Wars: Visions” and “The Book of Boba Fett.” The show delves into the early days of the Empire’s formation, the transition from Clone Troopers to Storm Troopers, and individuals’ reactions to the shifting power structure, all through the perspective of Clone Force 99, known as the Bad Batch. Season one hinted at Palpatine’s cloning process from “The Rise of Skywalker” and season two, which premiered in 2023, continued this thread, ending on a somber note. The series is confirmed to return for a third and final season, slated for a 2024 release on Disney+.

Tales of the Jedi Season 2

Season 1 of “Tales of the Jedi” comprised six episodes and premiered on October 26, 2022. The season explored two distinct storylines, one centered around Count Dooku and the other featuring Ahsoka Tano. Season 2 is scheduled for release in 2024, but specific details about the upcoming season, including which Jedi it will focus on, remain undisclosed. Similar to the first season, it is anticipated that all episodes will be released simultaneously.

The Acolyte

“The Acolyte,” produced and written by Leslye Headland, known for co-creating Netflix’s “Russian Doll,” serves as a prequel to the entire Star Wars franchise. It’s set a century before “The Phantom Menace” and delves into the emergence of the dark side threat, shedding light on the galaxy’s path to the prequel trilogy era. The show explores this narrative from the perspective of dark side users, a unique twist. Taking place in the High Republic era, it stars Amandla Stenberg and comprises eight episodes, with a 2024 Disney+ premiere, following filming from October 2022 to June 2023.

Andor Season 2

“Andor,” a prequel set five years before “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” stars Diego Luna as Rebel Spy Cassian Andor, chronicling the early Rebellion’s formation. Upon its September 2022 release, it garnered immense praise from both critics and fans, considered among the finest Star Wars series. A second season is confirmed, but production has stalled due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA Strikes. Although originally slated for a 2024 premiere, it’s uncertain given the delays. The final season will directly connect with “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.”

Lando

Announced at Disney’s Investor Day in December 2020, the “Lando” series had seen no progress initially. Justin Simien, director of Disney’s “Haunted Mansion,” was set to develop it. However, on July 27, 2023, a day before “Haunted Mansion” premiered, it was confirmed that Simien was no longer involved, and the series would be written by Donald Glover and his brother Stephen. While details are scarce, hopes are high for appearances by both Donald Glover and Billy Dee Williams. With the project just starting, a 2025 premiere at the earliest is expected.

The Mandalorian Season 4

Though not officially confirmed, it’s widely expected that “The Mandalorian” will come back for a fourth season. The uncertainty revolves around whether season 4 will serve as the story’s conclusion, as the overarching narrative is planned to wrap up in an upcoming Dave Filoni-directed film that will connect plot elements from various Disney+ series, including “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Ahsoka,” and “Skeleton Crew.” While no release details are confirmed, it’s safe to assume that “The Mandalorian” season 4 is in the works.

While fans eagerly anticipate Star Wars returning to the big screen, Disney+ is the current hub for exciting Star Wars content, with confirmed release dates and rumored projects shaping the future of the beloved franchise.
