The trailer for the Kannada film Kantara(Director: Rishab Shetty) has been released by Hombale Films following the announcement of a number of high budget movies. Since the cultural references and nuances don’t translate well into other Indian languages, I assume that this film is not pan Indian. But based on how the trailer has been received, I hope the production company releases the film nationwide with subtitles. The intriguing story of conflict between the government and the villagers who live close to the forest is called Kantara, which means forest. The world building is fascinating, and the visuals are breathtaking. Since most movie trailers end up telling the entire plot, it is admirable that this one refrains from doing so. A character begins the film by telling a young child a story about a king. A bhuta kola performer runs toward the jungle as the camera pans slowly across the scene. The movie’s title is then revealed in an aerial view. Stunning in every way! A forest official, played by Kishore Jayaram, interrupts a celebration at a village fair. He represents the secular government, which has no other purpose than to “civilise” the natives. Take note of his profanity and reprimands for cracker users. This scene is uncannily similar to the Supreme Court’s unsuccessful attempt to ban fireworks during the Deepavali festival and governments’ propensity to frequently meddle in Hindu rituals. As the government official makes it a personal goal to “tame” the unwashed masses, the conflict inevitably intensifies. Aravind Kashyap’s camerawork and Ajaneesh Loknath’s background score capture the love story, the hero’s conflict with the goon squad, and the backstabbing villagers in between. Even everyone in the theater appreciated the movie by standing and clapping for it at the [Read More…]
