The Game of Thrones spinoff, House of the Dragon, is confirmed for a second season, and it appears that the show might diverge more significantly from the original book source material. Despite the strikes happening in Hollywood, the production of the series has been able to proceed smoothly because most of its cast and crew are based in the UK. As for the future of the Game of Thrones franchise, it includes more spinoff projects, a sequel series focusing on Jon Snow, and animated series that will introduce viewers to new settings and characters.

House of the Dragon is gearing up for its second season on HBO, and it appears that, like the first season, the show might be making some significant changes from the original books. Despite the ongoing strikes in Hollywood, the production has been able to continue smoothly as most of its cast and crew are from the UK and not subject to SAG-AFTRA regulations. Season two has been in production since April and is set to return to HBO next year, continuing the story of the Targaryen dynasty’s downfall.

The first season already took creative liberties when adapting George R. R. Martin’s source material, the novel Fire & Blood. However, the upcoming season seems poised to take this even further. A recent photo from the set of House of the Dragon, shared by Redanian Intelligence, hints at the return of wights. The image features a board with various makeup samples labeled “undead,” a term familiar to Game of Thrones fans.

If wights indeed make an appearance in the new season of House of the Dragon, it would represent a significant departure from the source material. This could be an attempt to establish deeper connections with the original show and its central plotlines.

The Future of Game of Thrones

HBO is actively expanding the Game of Thrones universe with a variety of new projects. In addition to House of the Dragon’s second season, they have announced several other shows set in the world of Westeros. One of these is “A Knight of Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight,” which is based on “The Tales of Dunk and Egg.” These tales follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon V Targaryen, also known as Egg.

Another project in development is a sequel to the original series, focusing on Kit Harington’s character, Jon Snow. Jon Snow, one of the main protagonists of Game of Thrones, will return for this series, which picks up after his reunion with Tormund beyond the Wall.

The Game of Thrones universe is also expanding into the realm of animation with two series. One of them is said to be titled “The Golden Empire” and will be set in Yi Ti, an area in the eastern part of Essos that resembles Imperial China. Other spinoffs reportedly in development include “The Sea Snake,” which follows the adventures of Corlys Velaryon; “10,000 Ships,” centered around Princess Nymeria; and “Aegon’s Conquest,” showcasing the rise of Aegon the Conqueror.
