Ponniyin Selvan is a forthcoming Tamil film directed by Mani Ratnam and co-written by Elango Kumaravel and B. Jeyamohan. It is the first of two films based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan, produced by Ratnam and Allirajah Subaskaran through Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. A. R. Rahman created the soundtrack, Ravi Varman shot the film, A. Sreekar Prasad edited it, and Thota Tharani designed the production.

Since the novel’s popularity, established actors and filmmakers from the film industry have planned an adaptation, but it has not materialized for a variety of reasons. Following M. G. Ramachandran’s disastrous attempt in the late 1950s, Mani Ratnam attempted to adapt the novel in the mid-1990s and early 2010s, but was unsuccessful.
Ratnam restarted the adaptation in January 2019, citing it as his dream project, with Lyca Productions on board to support the production. Despite production being halted twice owing to the COVID-19 epidemic, the film began production in mid-December and was completed by September 2021, despite multiple changes in the cast and crew. The film was shot in several locations in India, with a few parts shot in Thailand.

Ponniyin Selvan was planned to be a standalone picture, but it was later divided into two parts. PS-I, the first installment, is set for a worldwide theatrical release on September 30, 2022, in both conventional and IMAX formats.
