18 Best Sci-Fi Movies on Hulu to Watch

Alien (1979)

The original Alien film is a legendary cornerstone of the sci-fi genre, spawning a long-running franchise that remains popular today. It was groundbreaking in several ways, boasting realistic effects and a strong female lead, which was considered risky at the time.

The movie achieved massive commercial success, featured unforgettable moments, and catapulted Sigourney Weaver into iconic status with her lead role. The story revolves around the ill-fated Nostromo commercial spaceship and its crew’s return journey to Earth. When they intercept a mysterious transmission from a nearby moon and decide to investigate, they unwittingly become hosts for a terrifying alien creature. This creature is later unleashed aboard their ship, leading to catastrophic consequences.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

In the 2011 reboot of the iconic franchise, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” James Franco took on the lead role alongside notable actors like John Lithgow and Freida Pinto. However, the true standout character was Caesar, a genetically modified ape exposed to an experimental Alzheimer’s disease drug that greatly boosted his intelligence. The exceptionally talented Andy Serkis provided the voice and motion-capture performance for Caesar.

The story takes a tragic turn as Caesar ends up feeling abandoned in an abusive ape sanctuary. Determined to break free, he devises a plan with a diverse group of fellow apes, ultimately assuming leadership and exposing them to the same drug. With their newfound enhanced abilities, this army of apes creates chaos and sets in motion events that threaten the survival of humanity while paving the way for the dominance of apes. The film boasts stunning cinematography and special effects, earning it an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects. It also spawned three sequels, with more in development.

Déjà Vu (2006)

When Denzel Washington lends his name to a movie, it’s almost a guarantee that you’ll get a quality and entertaining film. In 2006, he starred in the sci-fi thriller “Déjà Vu,” which was no exception to his track record. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the movie featured Denzel as ATF Special Agent Douglas Carlin, who joins forces with the FBI to use cutting-edge investigative technology.

The FBI has developed a method that combines satellite imagery and surveillance software to create a detailed record of events that can go back up to four and a half days in the past. Carlin, realizing the potential of this technology to create a kind of time window, comes up with a daring plan: to send a message to his past self in order to assist in tracking down a bombing suspect and potentially preventing the attack from occurring.

Ready Player One (2018)

Ready Player One, a treat for gaming enthusiasts, brilliantly merged augmented reality with stunning visual effects to create an exhilarating cinematic experience. Adapted from Ernest Cline’s popular novel and helmed by the legendary Steven Spielberg, the film achieved both commercial success and critical acclaim. Starring Tye Sheridan, the story unfolds in a dystopian 2045 where people seek refuge from their harsh realities in the immersive virtual world of OASIS.

Amidst a crumbling society, the death of OASIS’s creator triggers a high-stakes competition: he promises his immense wealth to the first player who can uncover a hidden digital Easter egg within OASIS. Wade Watts, a young underdog, steps into the contest and unexpectedly becomes a hero along the way. Although Ernest Cline released a sequel novel titled Ready Player Two in 2020, it remains uncertain whether Spielberg will direct a film adaptation of it.

Total Recall (2012)

In 2012, a remake of the iconic 1990 sci-fi film “Total Recall” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was released. This updated version featured Colin Farrell in the lead role and boasted an impressive ensemble cast including Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, and Ethan Hawke.

Set in a dystopian future where the world has been ravaged by chemical warfare, the story centers on Douglas Quaid, an ordinary factory worker who desperately craves a break from his mundane life. Seeking an escape, he visits Rekall, a company that transforms dreams into tangible memories. Quaid’s intention is to implant himself with the memories of a former spy, essentially rewriting his past. However, his Rekall experience takes a dangerous turn, and he finds himself being pursued by relentless adversaries. To survive, Quaid must align himself with a resistance group determined to overthrow the world’s oppressive leader.

Attack the Block (2011)

“Attack the Block” is a captivating British sci-fi film that lives up to its promises. However, it leans more towards humor, similar to “Shaun of the Dead,” rather than focusing solely on action like “Dawn of the Dead.” While the alien invasion concept isn’t entirely original, the movie offers a unique twist.

The story unfolds in Kennington, London, where we follow a fierce teenage gang led by Moses (played by John Boyega). After a nighttime encounter where they mug a nurse named Sam (portrayed by Jodie Whittaker), they witness an alien invasion threatening their city. Faced with this dire situation, Moses takes charge and leads his gang in an effort to eliminate the extraterrestrial invaders falling from the sky at an alarming rate. They must do this while navigating challenges such as evading the police and dealing with other rival gangs.

John Dies at the End (2013)

“John Dies at the End” is a quirky and unconventional comedy sci-fi horror film based on David Wong’s novel, directed by Don Coscarelli, known for his offbeat storytelling in films like “Phantasm” and “Bubba Ho-Tep.” If you’re familiar with Coscarelli’s style, you’ll likely appreciate this movie, which doesn’t follow a straightforward narrative. It throws you into a bewildering situation where it’s hard to make sense of what’s happening, but its boundless creativity makes it a must-watch for sci-fi enthusiasts.

The plot centers on Dave and John, played by Chase Williamson and Rob Mayes, who stumble upon a mysterious drug called Soy Sauce, leading them to otherworldly experiences and parallel dimensions. However, the drug’s side effects manifest as a bizarre supernatural invasion, and it’s left to this unlikely duo, who struggle to hold down regular jobs, to put a stop to it. What unfolds is a series of strange and uproarious encounters that may not have you on the edge of your seat, but will definitely leave you pondering the writers’ imaginative intentions in a positive way.

Vesper (2022)

In contrast to the numerous CGI-driven and action-packed disaster movies dominating recent years, Vesper, directed and written by Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper, stands out as a refreshing contribution to the sci-fi genre.

The film portrays a world devastated by an ecological disaster, where Earth has become inhospitable. Within this bleak backdrop, we follow the story of Vesper, a thirteen-year-old girl struggling to survive alongside her paralyzed father. However, her life takes a dramatic turn when she encounters a mysterious woman harboring a significant secret. Vesper soon realizes that her unique bio-hacking abilities may hold the last hope for saving humanity.

Vesper manages to achieve what many recent sci-fi films have failed to do by seamlessly blending emotional depth and intellectual engagement. Against the backdrop of this dystopian world, it offers a thought-provoking exploration of the essence of science fiction.

In Time (2011)

The famous saying “Time is money, and money can’t buy you time” takes on a unique twist in the movie “In Time,” set in a future where time has become the ultimate currency. In this world, people stop aging at 25 but must earn enough time to avoid death within a year. While the wealthy enjoy immortality, the poor struggle to accumulate the hours needed to survive.

The story follows Will, a man wrongly accused of murder who is forced to escape with a captivating woman as his hostage. With time running out, he must battle against the controlling system, clear his name, and unexpectedly falls in love with his companion. “In Time” offers a thought-provoking experience, driven by compelling performances from Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy, and a talented ensemble, making it a sci-fi thriller that shouldn’t be missed.

Elysium (2013)

The early 2010s marked a fantastic period for fans of science fiction, with the release of numerous thrilling sci-fi movies. Among these, Elysium stands out as a somewhat overlooked gem, despite its potential being not fully recognized. The film’s most notable aspect is its exploration of relatable issues like poverty, pollution, civil conflict, and inequality. Coupled with its stunning visuals and relentless action, it delivers a compelling sci-fi experience.

Set in the year 2154, the story unfolds in a dystopian Earth plagued by overpopulation, radiation, and pollution, leaving it in ruins. Meanwhile, a privileged few reside on the opulent space station Elysium, monopolizing all the crucial healthcare resources, while the rest of humanity suffers below. Max (portrayed by Matt Damon), a former convict working as a droid assembler, finds himself exposed to lethal radiation and resolves to infiltrate Elysium to obtain much-needed medical assistance. However, he soon discovers that his actions hold a far greater significance than just his own survival.

Linoleum (2023)

“Linoleum” stands out as a refreshingly original science fiction film, a rarity in today’s landscape dominated by CGI and intricate plot twists. This intricately woven movie presents multiple character storylines that subtly intersect, elevating it into a captivating drama. Jim Gaffigan and Rhea Seehorn deliver outstanding performances that enhance the film’s brilliance.

The story revolves around Cameron Edwin, the charismatic host of a children’s science TV show titled “Above and Beyond.” Despite his lifelong dream of becoming an astronaut, life has been unkind to him. However, when a mysterious space satellite crash-lands in his backyard, he seizes this unexpected midlife crisis as an opportunity to finally pursue his dreams. Alongside this personal journey, he grapples with the emergence of new connections and relationships in his life.

Real Steel (2011)

In the life of every individual, there exists a particular movie that holds a special place, one they revisit time and time again in the hope of recapturing the magic of that initial viewing. For this author, that movie is “Real Steel,” featuring Hugh Jackman. Even in the face of numerous contemporary robot-themed films that have dominated the box office (apologies to Transformers fans), “Real Steel” stands out, surpassing most of them with its exhilarating, Rocky-inspired action sequences, albeit with the added twist of robots.

The story unfolds in a world where human boxing has been replaced by robotic combatants. Charlie Kenton, a former boxer now working as a promoter, faces a challenging situation when he must care for his estranged son, Max. Their differences initially drive them apart, but their paths intersect with a discarded sparring robot named Atom in a junkyard. Little do they realize that Atom may hold the key to their dreams of becoming champions and radically transforming their lives forever.

Akira (1988)

In 1988, Akira emerged as a pivotal moment in introducing anime to Western culture, thanks to its groundbreaking futuristic cyberpunk world and enduring animation. While the story may seem intricate, especially with certain parts of Katsuhiro Otomo’s manga omitted in the adaptation, it becomes more understandable over time.

Back in 1988, Tokyo experienced catastrophic destruction caused by a young individual with psychic powers. The government swiftly apprehended this person, and they vanished from public knowledge. Fast forward about three decades, and the city has transformed into Neo-Tokyo, plagued by street gangs while the government strives to maintain control. However, when a peculiar individual named Tetsuo begins to manifest similar abilities, Tokyo’s destiny is once again in jeopardy.

Alita: Battle Angel (2019)

“Alita: Battle Angel exemplifies a successful Hollywood adaptation of a manga/anime, with the key factor being the collaboration between James Cameron (known for Avatar) and Robert Rodriguez (known for Spy Kids). Although the pacing of the story may seem rushed, this becomes noticeable only around the midpoint. The film excels in its captivating sci-fi world-building, offering a visually stunning dystopian setting enhanced by futuristic technology and droids.

The story revolves around Alita, a cyborg who awakens with no recollection of her past in a highly advanced future world. Dr. Ido (played by Christoph Waltz) takes her in, believing she holds the key to ending the ongoing chaos caused by the formidable Tiphares. With Dr. Ido’s guidance, Alita adapts to her new life and begins unraveling the mysteries of her past, leading her to confront those determined to exert control over the world.”

After Earth (2013)

After Earth faced challenges due to its co-writing by Will Smith and M. Night Shyamalan, resulting in mixed reviews. However, some believe it’s an underrated recent science fiction film with an engaging story exploring a unique concept. While not perfect, it’s a convincing movie worth your attention.

The story is set in the distant future on Nova Prime, as Earth has become uninhabitable. General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from a long deployment and embarks on a routine space journey with his son Kai (played by Jaden Smith). Unfortunately, their ship crashes on Earth, leaving Cypher Raige critically injured in the cockpit. Kai must venture through a dangerous wilderness to retrieve their rescue beacon, all while facing alien creatures. This journey tests his admiration for his father and what it takes to become a hero like him.

Prey (2022)

The Predator franchise has a rich history of delivering impressive films, and “Prey” is a commendable addition to this beloved science fiction series involving extraterrestrial hunters. Positioned as the fifth installment, “Prey” serves as a prequel to the previous four movies, unfolding its storyline in the year 1719 within the Northern Great Plains.

The film centers around Naru, a young Comanche healer who aspires to emulate her brother Taabe, a skilled hunter. While she is prepared to confront any native forest creatures, an even more daunting and cunning threat emerges in their midst. Naru finds herself entangled in the pursuit of an intelligent Alien predator armed with advanced technological weaponry. Despite the high stakes, she is determined to eliminate this formidable alien and safeguard her home, fully aware that a single mistake could cost her life.

Ender’s Game (2013)

“Ender’s Game,” directed by Gavin Hood and featuring Harrison Ford, is an impressive military science fiction movie. It shares some similarities with “The Hunger Games” in terms of its space setting, but it distinguishes itself with its heightened violence and imaginative elements. While the film didn’t quite reach the same level of acclaim as Orson Scott Card’s 1985 novel of the same name, such a feat is rare in today’s entertainment landscape.

In a distant future, Earth has suffered devastation at the hands of an alien race called the Formics. After fifty years of unity, humanity is determined to avoid extinction by this technologically superior species. Ender Wiggin, separated from his siblings, is sent to a space-based battle school where he undergoes intense training to become a lethal warrior, ultimately embarking on a path to save the world.

Dual (2022)

Upon discovering she had a terminal illness with no cure in sight, Sarah, portrayed by Karen Gillan, decides to explore the possibility of cloning herself if such advanced technology existed on Earth. In the storyline, it becomes clear that Sarah chooses to create a clone of herself, intending for this clone to eventually live with her mother and boyfriend as her replacement. However, an unexpected twist occurs when Sarah unexpectedly enters remission, and her clone appears to have formed stronger bonds with her loved ones than she ever did.

Complicating matters further, the law dictates that only one person can exist, and it’s now a matter of life or death between Sarah and her duplicate. To settle this dilemma, a duel to the death becomes the only solution. To prepare for this unusual confrontation, Sarah receives training from a stern martial arts instructor, portrayed in a humorous manner by Aaron Paul.
